I have a computer here that has a totally-ruined PS/2 keyboard connector. Trying to salvage this old 300-MHz system, I thought of adding a USB card (It doesn't have built-in USB.) and a USB keyboard. It follows that one would need to get into the BIOS, occasionally. Well, that would necessitate DOS support for a USB keyboard attached to an add-on USB card.

Is there any such thing as that? If so, where do I get it?

    Why.....?

If the old 300MHz is salvageable, still able to use it, even though the normal 'ports' for the board are busted up and totally non functional, why try to install a USB card...?

I do not know if the board will recognize a USB card especially when it is in DOS or boot up, in which you would not be able to get into BIOS to alter it.

However. in your parts bin, Or parts store should be some old cards there for serial connectors or ps-2 add in card, that has the new ps-2 port that you need. 1=the other.

Install that and see what happens.. You might have to find an old Serial connector Mouse, but should not be too much trouble.

Another option is to go out and visit the oldest seediest Pawn shops around town.
Looking for a trade computer that is dirt cheap,($25.00) or so, which is close to what you will pay for the other setup. Strip off all the parts from it that you can use on your 300 MHz and go from there...

Alex, your idea of installing a USB card for the keyboard is excellent. Unfortunately, the bios in that older machine probably doesn't have the "Enable DOS Support for USB" option like all the newer machines do. Sorry I don't have any alternative ideas.

There was a post or two over at VDr about DOS support for USB devices, and I believe that someone had found some drivers that may work.

But, I'm pretty sure they won't help you access the BIOS with a USB keyboard, 'cause the drivers won't load until you've already booted from the hard drive.
