When I installed Windows XP on a new 500 GB hard drive, it found only 127 GB. Do I have to do the rest of the drive as a new partition? Or did I do something wrong? It is a SATA drive.

New note: I loaded Partition Magic and it too only sees about 132 GB on the SATA drive. Why doesn't the drive show up as 500 GB? My motherboard is rather old, so although it does have SATA, could there be a size limit on the drive?

Further research shows that Windows XP needs SP1, or maybe even SP2, to handle a SATA disk drive bigger than 127 GB. I'll install SP2 and see if that handles the problem.

Installed SP2 for Windows XP and can now see the entire 500 GB of the hard drive (or more correctly, the 467 GB that it equates to). Expanded the partition, and am now all set.
