   I have dolwnloaded all the codec packs and win med player 9 still wont play avi files please help

   You'll need the Divx codecs installed, if you don't have them.
   http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/download/
   If you choose the custom install, you can choose only to install the codecs rather than the whole package with the Divx player and converter.
