New PC will (of course) have Vista Sp1 on it.

Want to know if I can use a full disk backup (Acronis) to
restore WinXP SP3 to the new, larger Hard drive with Vista
on it? I realize that Vista will be overwritten by this action.

Would it be best to format the new systems harddrive first?

The BIOS/CMOS will be different - can i expect any
    problems from those areas?

Also, some of the hardware (sound card) will be different from
what comes with the system. I can replace the cards (after a
final backup of old system and before restoring to new system.
I realize that i will have to turn off the on-board sound in the
setup but can i expect any other problems.

Searching the web for things like this was not very helpful
    but i tried.

    Appreciate any help,
    savagcl

Are the mobo, cd - dvd, ram chips, video cards etc all the same in both machines?

Will you be formatting the old pc to avoid having the same key code on two machines?

    Steve R Jones,
    Thanks for replying so quickly....

Unfortunately, No, All will be different.
Will probable keep the new graphics card (more memory on-board).

MB, Chipset, memory will all be changed. I know I'll have to re-install
    some drivers and programs.

After i make the swap, I will need to re-format the old system HD. My
daughter has her own version of winxp and programs she has to load.

I'm sure I will still need to go through the MS registration because of
    all the hardware/software changes.

    Thanks,
    savagcl

    Add to above -

I currently have a 5.1 sound system, the new sys is 7.1. Is that going
    to be a problem?

    thanks,

I have got a very similar problem. Exchanging VISTA and XP
between two computers. I don't see the above quoted problems with the hardware which is the same or very similar.
I have two very large external HD with USB. Imagine the moment on which you have formatted the internal HD of the first computer,
and switched off power. The BIOS is untouched by definition.
Does it make any difference if it is born with slight differences among the two computers? The only problem would be the very
large stress I would have to bear during the operation.

savagcl, you'd be a lot better off doing a fresh install of XP. Bare minimum, you'd have to a repair install of XP if you attempted to use the image that is full of all the wrong drivers. Doing a repair install might kill Vista and or kill the boot menu.

Also need to create some blank drive space on the new machine.
