djcobra - Welcome to the Board :)

Sorry to hear of your problems, but .....
    is probably overly optimistic.

As you are unable to start the computer in Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration your options are limited.

Do you have a retail XP installation CD? A Recovery CD is of little use unless all your files are backed up - which they should be - as it will reformat the drive.

If you have a retail XP CD your best option is to make a repair install

If you only have a Recovery CD and your files are not backed up I suggest you remove the drive from the computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and, if you can access it, copy your files off and burn to DVD. Replace the drive in your computer and run the Recovery CD - any programs that you loaded to the computer will need to be reinstalled.

It may be that you have a hardware problem with the drive - turning the power off rather than shutting Windows down correctly is not recommended, but is generally harmless. Did you shut down on the power button - that is OK, or at the wall socket?

You should be able to repair your installation using your friend's CD.

Switching off at the wall socket could cause problems if you are unlucky - e.g. possibly if the computer is writing to the drive at the time the power went off.

yeah doing a hard shutdown could damage some files on the hard drive that could also explain the situation you are having right now but if you get a Windows disk you should first run a check disk at the command prompt that seemed to work for me in the past. But if that does not work you'll have to do what PeteC suggested is to run a repair install
