    Hi All,
I found this site when a second computer got the corrupt hal.dll problem. Using the tips here I solved it within a few minutes. RESULT! :)
Unfortunately, I had already meddled with a laptop on my home network which had the same problem (Is there a virus causing this) In trying to fix it, rather than format (and not getting good advice first), I ended up installing XP onto something I called WINNEW - hoping that I would not lose all my data and applications. At least it works, but... I was able to get back one of the profiles, but had to go through the pain of reinstalling drivers etc etc etc. I am still unable to run some applications - one in particular which is looking for its licence to run, and a game which had been activated over the internet and now will not run at all.
Is there any way of undoing what I did, is the data I need still there somewhere? (registry?)
At least I had learned from that experience to look harder for advice when the second machine went down. (Work machine, very important)
    Help please
    Annie

Well, obviously my problem was too easy for anyone to help - I have resolved it myself! Ran the recovery console again, and this time had the courage to not add the alternate windows installations. Old profiles there, ready and waiting for me.

Some of our experts are not much on-line in the weekend ;)

Glad you solved your problem, and thanks for posting back.
