Reinstalling win 2000 on a Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop.
Using an Oem disk but I have the Product key number that came with the computer.
But Im missing all the drivers for sound, lan, video etc.
Cant get to the internet with this computer so I might use Win update.
Using the Toshiba website it gives me 102 possible drivers for the Tecra M1 laptop.
In device mgr I have the following items with a yellow ? next to them. These are
    the problem items as shown.
    Base System Device
    Ethernet controller
    network controller
    PCI device
    Universal serial bus (usb) controler
    Unkown device
    Video controler (VGA compatible)
I did manage to find a sound driver for which there only were 2 choices.
Can some one help me out here????
Thanx in advance for any and all help.
Feels good to fix others problems.

    Hi Pearhouse...

Try Toshiba's web site...I've listed a direct link to your Laptop model
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...ivateItems=undefined&all_docs=false&x=24&y=10

If that link does not work try the following link below then select your model...
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modSel.jsp
    - For #1 Choose Category select Portables
    - For #2 Choose Family select Tecra
    - For #3 Choose Model you won't be able to choose your model until you click on the "Show Archived Models ". Once you do that you can select your M1
    - Then click the "Show Results" button
    - Once your at the "Downloads" page select "Windows 2000" from the "Refine By" window

    Hope this helps...

    toshiba ddrivers

Thats exactly what I did but after further refining for example:
Lan --- it gives me 15 files to choose from. There has to be a better way.
If I dont refine it by the exact item it gives me 102 files for the list of items that i posted in my previous question.
Some how there has to be better way.
I did manage to get the sound and video to load by trail and error onlly because there were only 2 or 3 choices for each.
    Thanx
    I still open for suggestions.

Sorry I missed this line from your post

Well, you should be able, for the Lan, narrow that down even more...If you just want the Ethernet card driver you can forget a few of those selections as they are for Wireless.

If this was my Laptop and I had those 15 selections I would chose the "Toshiba Gigabit Ethernet LAN Driver for Windows 2000 (v6.4.16; 03-10-2003; 487K) ". The reason for my selection is the "Category. The category for my selection is Driver - Lan

    Finding drivers

    Welcome to the club
Windows XP is better at finding drivers - but not for stuff that came out after windows xp - motherboard , network card , sound etc

First of all if windows does not install the driver it marks the device with a yellow exclamation point or question mark - just means the driver is not installed
If installed properly there will be no such marks and the device manager will tell you that "the device is installed properly "
    To find the drivers
    1) check on the Toshiba site or even sites that are international in other countries if need be
    2) figure out what the devices are
even in a proprietary computer like a Toshiba laptop the devices/ chipsets are usually some third party. You go for the Toshiba specific brand first but if not either a generic driver or even another computer vendors

To figure out the devices you can run a number of programs

    1) for older computers ( yours included ) aida32 may well tell you and even point you in the correct direction

    http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=aida32

its not supported anymore. Guy got a job in Montreal and the company that hosted it in Hungary is no longer supporting it or doing updates

    2) Belarc advisor

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

once you have the list of devices ( and sometimes specific version)
then you can look for the drivers

    1) driverguide.com is a library for downloads
it is free somewhat. They seem to keep changing the rules
    2) a very good service that scans your hard drive and locates drivers is
    www.driverhq.com
    3) You can google the driver driver windows 200 download

you may also want to upgrade your direct x version for your video card
( i think that xp came with direct x 6) just for your info
lastly many of the drivers for windows 2000 are xp drivers
