Daizy, I think the question is about saving the MIDI or wave files that play in the background if they have been embedded in emails.
I sent myself some of these--the music played all right, but I sure could not figure out how to extract the background music :( .

    background sounds

    Daizy and Abraxas:

    thanx for your care.

when u create a new mail in OutlookExpress, you can go to Format menu and select background and sound . in this way you can set a background sound for your mail. and when the receiver opens your mail, the embeded sound file starts playing.

I've received such a mail from a buddy and want to keep the embedded sound file for myself. I want to add this sound file to my library without keeping the mail for a whole life.

I just want to know if there's a way for this task.

Up to now, to keep such sound files, I forward the received mail to my own hotmail account and then go to MSN home page, sign in into my account and open the mail that I forwarded to myself. the sound file is not embedded anymore and is attached to it. and i can simply download the attached file.

I was just looking for a simpler way or a way that doesn't need web base mail accounts.

    thanx

    Hi MnInShdw,
I just happen to come across your posting and think
I have an easy solution to offer to you:

    1. Clear your Temp. Internet Files (Tools>Internet Options>Delete Files)
    2. Open your email with the background sound youwant to save.
    3. Go to: Start>Find>Files or Folders
    4. Click the Browse button
    5. Click the + sign left to Drive_? (where ? is your primary drive)
    6. Scroll down and click the + sign left to Windows
    7. Scroll down and double-click Temporary Internet Files
    8. Click the OK button
    9. Type in the "Named: text line ": *.mid (or just a *) and click the Find button.

You can double-click the sound file to listen.
    CAUTION:
Do not use cut and paste!

To copy the file: Right-click the file, select Copy and then Paste the file to the folder of your choice.

    Note:
You can rename the file, but don't change the extention!
    Have Fun!

    Yep!!! Works like a charm.
    I use it quite often.
My posting describes really the long way. You can actually sort the find folder by clicking the Modified column and pick the correct sound file this way.

Lately, many web sites clean up the audio files on your PC when you leave their page. This is a way to keep a copy.
    :D

I asked because when I was trying to find a solution, I searched my HD for any .mid files, as you suggested, and found none. I wonder what the difference is here.

OK.. here I'll prove it to you:
    1. Click Start>Find>Files or Folders...
A.) Make sure your path in "Look in:" shows C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files
B.) You type in the "Named:" text box *.mid

    2. Open your IE and go to the web site: http://www.mamarocks.com/

    3. Now click the Find Now button in the Find Pane.

You should see the rcknrllm[1].mid file

    Note:
If you search your HD without using the * wildcard your search will return 0 result. Your search text string must be *.mid
If you view the source for the web page you have to use .mid as the search text string.

You are absolutely right. The process you described gave exactly the results you described.
The difference is that the OP was trying to extract a .mid file from an email. This is still a different thing.
The problem was really how to extract a .mid file from an .eml file.

Nope!... It isn't! Same principle applies to .eml files.
I'll sent to you a OE stationery to proof it.

    Hi Abraxas and Ruscal

    Thanx for all the replys.

Ruscal is right and I used to take copies of *.swf files with this method. Any how, during my vacation, I found an easier way to back up the midi or wave files that is embedded in mails.

Open OE and click on the Tools menu and select Options . Click on the Send tab and make sure that you have Plain Text selected and not Html . Also make sure you have a checkmark on Include message in reply and no checkmark for
Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent.

Now the only thing you have to do is to view the mail with midi in your preview window and click Forward . Midi and wave files and all the images will be attached to the forwarded mail. Right click midi or wave files and select save as....

    and you're done.

Yes, I have gotten many .swf games that way.
But, unfortunately, there were no mid's in any temp folders on my computer as they used to be in ME (I think).
The forwarding method worked, however, and the midi was converted to an attachment in that letter and could be saved from there.

Thanks for that tip. At least it saves the OP from sending it to Hotmail to retrieve the sound!
