I am having issue with my XP MCE system loading and installing windows and IE updates. I ran a windows file scan from run/cmd using "sfc /scannow" command and there are DLL files that the scan says windows needs to "correct ", but is asking for the XP discs. I followed instructions from Marc Liron and Mike Boesen links to update the registry for the i386 directory as a source path which allowed the scan to get to the very very end, but then it asked for the XP discs for 5 DLL files (I had to cancel 5 times before the scan continued), so those files weren't updated. I can't get the original XP discs from Sony as they don't supply them and they want me to recover from the recovery partition which I don't want to do. Are there any recommendations on what else I need to do? Thanks.

You can either Gogle for the missing .dlls and see if a download is available or - preferred .....

    Run Dial-a-Fix

Check all the boxes on the opening dialogue > Go

When that completes click on the Hammer icon and select Reinstall BITS.

If you are asked for a Windows CD then you will need to revert back to my first suggestion.

    Hi,

I'll try the Dial-a-fix option since I don't know which DLL files are at issue since the /scannow command doesn't tell you the files that need to be corrected. I'll respond back once I try d-a-f. Thanks.

I found the dll issues in the even viewer - thanks. Also a Microsoft topic on it #909059 - seems it's a known issue with XP MCE specifically that certain files can't be found when running sfc scans and they're not needed in MCE, so the fix is to cancel out of the load XP CD dialog box as the files aren't on the CD either!

The files are ehcircl.dll, ehiepg.dll, ehituner.dll and snchk.exe, among others.

Now, unfortunately, even after running d-a-f and the BITS tool, I still have the issue with IE updates not being able to install, specifically IE 956390. Any ideas how I can get this to install?

    Thanks.

Nothing fixed my update install issue. Finally called Microsoft support and 5.5hrs and 3 service reps later (India and Phillipines) [free by the way!], they finally got it fixed. Evidently there were many corrupt files that needed to be replaced and "access denied" error messages, so they ran/installed a utility "subinacl ", then ran a batch file "reset.bat" that they created in notepad, which I have provided below. This ran for about an hour checking and resolving files. Finally, then ran Windows update which loaded SP3, without any evident issues...so I hope all has been fixed. Wanted to provide this update in case somone runs into the same windows update issue that doesn't get fixed with the links you provided earlier, going with Microsoft support maybe the last alternative, and in my case, so far, has seemed to work.

Thanks for your help along the way!

    =============
After loading the "subinacl" executable, the following commands were loaded into notepad and saved as a .bat file, that was then run to fix corrupt files. Where there is "user login name here ", they had my windows login name.

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant= "user login name here "=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant= "user login name here "=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant= "user login name here "=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant= "user login name here "=f

Thanks for the update and for sharing the info. At least MS managed to dig you out of the hole they prepared for you in the first place :)
