I have a new computer, installed Office XP. Outlook worked fine, until I tried to move my backup .pst file from my old computer to the new computer via backup HD copy. The backup opened fine and worked, but the next time I tried to open the new Outlook I got the never before seen error message "another program is trying to access the email addresses stored in Outlook..." When this error message pops up, it takes over the computer. I click "no" (sometimes it takes multiple clicks as the window keeps popping back up) and Outlook crashes. I tried clicking "yes "but this crashed it also. I put in the Outlook installation disk and tried to repair, but nothing changed. I cannot get to any other Outlook menus. I ran Eset, Adaware, and Spybot and no viruses/spyware was detected. I am at a loss and need my Outlook- any help much appreciated. I have used Outlook for years and never saw this warning message before, and I don't know how to even see what program could possibly be hijacking me. Thanks.

Well, I think we need to know a little bit more about your new system.

    What OS are you running?
What other Office apps and versions are you using?
Do you have any mail merged documents open?
Did you try to open Outlook after FIRST performing a "clean boot "?

Did you try Outlook in safe mode?
(Hold doen the CTRL key when opening Outlook)

    Reply to Outlook crasing message

Windows XP SP3, Office XP SP3, Dell XPS 1730 (new) w/4 gig ram, INtell 2.4 Core 2 T7700, Nvidia 8700GTm x 2 video. I have installed Office and all the other programs work (as did Outlook before I restored the backup) but have them all off while trying this. At one point I had Firefox open, but I have tried it with that closed and same crash. Outlook in safe mode did the same crash. I did NOT try a clean boot as I didn't think of it. I will try that, thanks, but even if I get it going, I still have to hunt down why this is happening or I have to clean boot each time? Sorry I am a little lost on that. This is a pretty new computer- I had loaded nothing but eset, my games on it, then browsers, then was putting in my Office data when this happened, and I did not change anything from when it worked the first time as a "fresh" Outlook load, to when I loaded my back .pst file from the old computer and imported it. It worked, I looked at an old email and my calendar, all fine, then a day later I tried to reopen Outlook and here I am. Assuming this IS another program trying to get access, malware or legit, any thought on finding it? or is it just trial and error with clean boot? Again, I ran Nod32, Spybot, and Adaware multiple times on this and hte backupHD and they are supposedly clean. Thanks again for any insight.

    "Accidentally" fixed Outlook!

I tried everything you said- no dice. Then I went to Add/remove Programs to remove/reinstall Outlook again in desperation, and I saw an Outlook add in from a company called Cyberlink I had missed before.

I check it out on the net, and it turns out to be a Dell add in that meshes with Outlook. I removed it on a whim, and Outlook now starts up fine.

Hopefully others having problems with the "Another program is trying to access the email addresses store in Outlook" pop up can benefit from this, especially Dell owners.

Now if I can just get fix issues with my inbox I will be set, but at least the info is there and the program is working.

    Thanks for the advice- Eric

Hmmm, Outlook in Safemode should have prevented that add in from loading.

Anyway, I'm glad you got it up and running!

Hmmm, I re-read your post, but didn't see any other information about issues with your inbox?

Anyway, have a look at running the the Inbox Repair Tool.

    Inbox reply

The inbox wasn't part of my original issue, just something I threw in as an aside and meat to be facetious but I forgot the emoticon. An easy matter of moving things around now that I can actually get Outlook open. Thanks again WBBS.
