    hello:

My OS is win xp, sp 2, Home ed., & Windows Movie Maker 1
When adding a title to a clip, a WMM prompt appears telling me:
    The required file: “C:\Program files\movie maker\shared\sample 1. jpg”
    could not be found.
This warning notice stops everything until I cancel it and continue but it keeps
popping up to interfere with the process!
Please explain how to either obtain the missing file or turn off the troublesome
warning notice as it interferes with a process that actually works.

    thanks,
    jim :)

Select a .jpg photo you like and copy it to that folder (C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared). Change the name of the file to Sample1.jpg. You might find it say, appears as a background in the title.

    Thanks Matt.
there is no 'shared' section in my C:\
    I only have:
C:\Program files\movie maker (with some .dll files there) - no ‘shared’ section or mention of ‘sample 1’ in my computer.

What happens when you open Windows Explorer and copy/paste \Program files\movie maker\shared in the address bar (an press Enter)?

    ...it shows: can not find.
Search has found a file: "sample1" in Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads (it looks like one of the images we see in MM).

    help/how to files won't open

the symptoms are that when I try open the 'how to edit clips' file and the 'Help' tab top of page, I get a prompt:
    C:\\Program Files\moviemaker\MUI\0409\MOVIEMAKER.chm
    can not be found.

I have downloaded and installed Sp 3 but the 'help/how to' files still will not open and the above prompt still comes up.

    thanks
    jim

Jim, I can find Movie Maker 2.1 or Movie Maker 2.6 for Vista, I can't see any version 3.

On my system, in the folder MUI\0409 there is the file moviemk.chm. Is that what it is asking for?

I wonder why these files have "disappeared "? Have you deleted any files you didn't think were necessary?

I meant to write: downloaded Service Pack 3 from Microsoft and it has installed the missing Shared folder and the components needed so now the Titles & Transitions, etc. work just fine. Its just that when I select either How To link or Help tab the prompt about 'MUI\0409' comes up.
Going to: 'C:\Program Files\Movie Maker'........there is no 'MUI' listed there - just 'shared' (now).
In a way, I may not ever need those help options because I don't expect to be making any long, elaborate movies for now. The little shorts I make are just fine in a simple mode. But if you can think of a way to restore those other functions, I'd appreciate any feed back on it.
I posted this string separately because it is not really a part of the other 'missing Sample1' string since that is resolved.
    thanks 4 help
    jim :)

Try to be accurate with the information Jim, otherwise we lose time researching the wrong thing.

Do a search of your Windows drive for moviemk.ch.

On a Windows installation disk I can see MOVIEMK.CH_. That is a compressed file that can expanded to make the moviemk.chm file.

Do a search for moviemk.ch first. You may need to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" (Folder Options)

Did you try installing Movie Maker 2.1 in my link?

Re: Did you try installing Movie Maker 2.1 in my link?

I went to that link but found that I could only do an ‘update’ – not anything about a download
    From the link:
    Download Instructions
Movie Maker 2.1 is available for download with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). You can download SP2, Movie Maker 2.1, and all future critical updates automatically by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP.
You can also download SP2 and Movie Maker 2.1 from Microsoft Update. If you cannot use Automatic Updates or download SP2 via Windows Update, order a CD.

so I used all those updates and then down loaded win Sp 3 which solved the Sample1 problem – not the missing MUI folder.

My Win. Exp. Search shows MOVIEMK.chm in several places and some of them show question mark images.
When I look in C:\Windows\ServiecPack\i386\Land – there is a link to the actual MM help file with all the help information that I could not find in my own MM program!
As a temporary measure, I have placed a desk top short cut to the MM help files (in Land) in case I need to look up some question while working in MM.

    Jim :)

Oh, and if I can down load MM 2.1, do I need to uninstal the version I currently have before installing a new down load?

I should have checked the "download ", I should have expected it doesn't mean that, it means "Windows Updates ".

All you need to do is open the Movie Maker folder. Make a new folder and call it MUI. Open the folder MUI and make a new folder and call it 0409. Open the folder 0409 and paste a copy of that Help file (moviemk.chm) there. All should be in working order after that

    problem fixed

this post at TechArea forum fixed everything:

If you are looking for a way to reinstall the file...
    read the following...

The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
    MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

    1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
    2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
    3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK

    thanks 4 all you help,
    jim
