    Hello all,
fantastic website! As you may well have guessed I am just a basic user of computers. I recently purchased a new laptop (Toshiba) to which I presumed to be of quite good quality (well that what the guy in PC world told me). I only use my laptop for ebay and basic word docs ets. However I have noticed that when in ebay the pages are loading really slowly, so slowly that I am missing out on bids! This is really frustrating me and I do not know why as I did not have this problem on my old computer which was around 3yrs old! When I purchased my laptop I was talked into purchasing a thing called Techfriend to which I could call a number and get help with anything on my laptop. I gave them a call to explain my problem and they just told me to reset my laptop back to origianl settings. I have not really added anything to my laptop since I purchased it apart from my printer, norton security and digital camera so I could not see the point of resetting my laptop. They also mentioned that it could be my internet provider, but I dont think it is as I am using the same internet provider as before.
So thought I would try this web site to see if there is a simple fix as to why pages in ebay are loading so slowly. I do hope this is a simple problem and that someone could help me.
Sorry for the long post, I look forward to a reply.

Thank you so much for your reply. I have followed what you said and downloaded both items. At first I though it had worked but unfortunately the pages are still very slow loading, do you have any other ideas I can try out? Is it anything to do with Norton security that I have?
    Many thanks

Quite possible, I regard Norton as bloatware (personal opinion) but don't disable it just yet...

How are you connecting to the internet? If you are connecting directly to a modem then disconnect and remove NIS and make sure at the very least Vista's firewall is enabled before reconnecting.

If via a router then it'll be safe enough to uninstall NIS for testing.

If ebay is faster without Norton then I'd advise changing your firewall/AV software but I'll let others make suggestions (I don't use Vista).

Thank you for your quick reply, I will try and do what you have requested, is there a way I can disable Norton instead of removing it? My husband has come home with a cd today called Kaspersky internet security, would I be better off getting rid of Norton and using this instead.
Thank you so much for your info.

There should be but it's been a while since I used norton (not since it was the real norton actually). TBH most of my dealings nowadays are people asking me to remove it from their system.

Either way disabling it may not help, the various Norton suites root themselves deep in your system and the only way to ensure that it's not interfering is to remove it.

Kaspersky is a reasonable package but as I said I don't use vista so I couldn't advise how good it would be on your system.

If Norton came as a trial you will need to decide if you are going to start paying for it later, otherwise you would(should) uninstall it at that stage anyway. I agree with the suggestion to uninstall it. It should be on the disks that you received with the laptop if you want to put it back on.

I have seen some recent "bugs" with Kaspersky, maybe they have fixed them with patches.

There are free antiviruses around for personal use. Free firewalls, although Windows firewall seems "alright ". Free antispyware.

It will be up to you to research which type you would prefer.

My advice, have the security system installed, but learn how to avoid making yourself vulnerable. Don't just expect the security system is going to do it for you. Look at all the "I got a virus" or "my system is crippled" posts in the Security forums. Read the "An ounce of prevention..." sticky.

I would advise uninstalling all Anti-virus and Firewall proograms. You will be same as I am guessing you are connecting via a wireless router. If you are connecting by router and uninstalling doesnt solve your problem. Maybe it could be the wireless connection?

Hope everything works well for you...

    Hi jlb,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting. Since you purchased a new laptop, it most likely came with a trial of Norton Internet Security either 2008 or 2009). There may be other internet security suites and antivirus applications that may have been installed as well. You should never have more than one antivirus and internet security application installed at one time or you will experience conflicts. Having more than one can greatly reduce the ability of Norton to detect infections and cause overall slowness.

My suggestion would be to check for other installations of antivirus and internet security applications and remove them. You should also disable the Windows firewall as Norton will handle this for you. You can then launch Norton Internet Security, click on "run LiveUpdate" and then perform a "Full System Scan" to check for infections.

If you decide to purchase the Norton internet Security 2009 suite, you will be fully protected. The new suite has been completely rewritten and installs in about a minute.

If you have any more questions , please feel free to post to this thread.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Just curious but perhaps you can help, what do you think that NIS offers over other (often free) security packages?
