This is what I am having problems with. When I press Search the dog appears, but nothing else appears. Everything else above the dog is blank. I am supposed to be able to put in a file name that I need to search, but it does not allow me to do that because there is nothing there. Do you have any ideas of what I need to do to correct this? I called the Compaq people and he said that it sounded like it might be corrupt. How in the world did this happen. It just worked yesterday. He said that I would have to pay over $60.00 for him to help me work through this problem because I guess the hardware warranty is out. I just purchased this system last Feb. so I thought I had a year warranty. Any ideas? Thanks!

There have been some fixes for the Search Companion at WindowsUpdate. Have you installed the updates?
Any other changes, like a registry cleaner run?
An alternative to the MS search that is faster (no little dog, but I am about to shoot mine, anyway) is Agent Ransack. It will put an entry under "Search" in your Start menu and you can use whichever you like.

P.S. Don't pay anyone (as if you were planning to). This group will figure it out.

Another alternative is PowerDesk, see earlier thread

Even when XP search function works, it's poor.

I'll check your recommendation Abraxas I'm always open for new stuff but i must say PowerDesk search is treating me very well.

PowerDesk is good, too. I removed mine simply because I thought it somewhat redundant, but it does put everything together in one place.

I agree, I never run PD itself. I just pinned the Search function of it onto my Start Menu so I can use that without opening the main prog. the rest of it is rather along for the ride and if your link proves out, I'll probably use it and gain some disk space back.

There are some other good features of PD that some folks would find useful though.

    Thanks Abraxas
I've tried Agent Ransack and it's all I hoped for.

I'll be using it exclusively and passing it along to the rest of my clan.

It works-It beats MS Find--It's free

Abraxas - I agree with Zephyr. Outstanding search program.

Just solved a problem I've had with our main 2K file server. It munches it's way thru a 160Gb drive (nearly full) way quicker than the usual WE search thing. And it doesn't have that stupid dog.!! :D

And has the options I really need for searches and to deal with the search results.

    Thanks.

Glad you guys like it. I feel affirmed!
