    Hey all,

My issue is this - my boyfriend is in Japan for work for the next 2 weeks, he's a great guy but not necessarily computer savvy. He's "updated" his computer and loaded Antivirus 2009 in the process and cannot get it to go away. I found this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-virus-removal/76117-how-uninstall-antivirus-2009-a.html but am wondering if this is still the best way to get rid of unwanted antivirus program.

He needs something that's SIMPLE to follow and do, without loading a bunch of **** onto the computer that he won't need or that could possibly ***** with what he's doing for work.

Unfortunately his computer is the only way we can communication (we use Skype) and I don't, nor does he, want to lose that.

    Please help...

    Thank you
    Chrystal

He's pretty on the money in that link you gave. This is a very similar guide, and goes into a bit more detail.

The process is actually simpler than it looks. It's just an anti-virus program that can specifically target the malware he has. If he can operate a computer and use skype, this isn't going to be a problem - and it shouldn't conflict with anything he's doing for work.

This is a very similar guide. It goes into more detail, though, which might prove helpful.

He can load it onto his computer fine - it won't mess with any of his work. The program is just an anti-virus that cleans out this particular infection very well. If he's smart enough to operate skype, he's smart enough to operate this.

(I replied earlier, but my post isn't showing up... sorry if this turns into a double-post.)

First things first - I am not a Malware expert and make no claim to be one. Secondly, MBAM is an excellent piece of software. Now, having said that, I would discourage you from simply following the instructions in the link you referenced or the links provided by CUISTech. My advice would be to wait until a WindowsBBS Malware Specialist or Staff Member can assist you. Chances are very good that this isn't all that ails your machine and unless you are very comfortable with searching and editing the registry, you aren't going to get rid of all of Anti Virus 2009 with MBAM used in this manner or with MBAM alone. Why do you think all of those other references are there?

The last two instances of XP Anti-Virus 2008 and 2009 that I have encountered were only parts of a blended threat that had created multiple problems on the users machines. One included a very difficult to remove stealth rootkit. CUISTech is certainly trying to provide assistance but there's an old saying that goes along way here - a little knowledge can be very dangerous. Wait for a specialist.

    ;)

    Hi there,

Thank you very much for your responses to my issue. He's quite capable of running the MBAM and adjusting the things he needs to adjust if it comes down to that, I just don't want the laptop to get messed up any more than it currently is. It is our ONLY way of communicating for the next 2 weeks (his cell doesn't work in Japan nor is there any local "pay phones" that he can drop $50 a day into to call me).

If he runs MBAM currently, just to get rid of the annoying pop ups, and comes back to the states so I can adjust his registry/completely fix the issue, would that work?

I'm more than happy to go through all the hoops to get his computer completely fixed once it's in front of me and I have my other computer to work with it. He HATES having to mess with the computer. To him the computer should just work... period. Load the latest drivers and be able to do what he wants with it. As is we had issues with it that a co-worker "fixed" and ended up with the wrong drivers, programs, etc shortly before he left for Japan. Literally I was loading programs on the computer as we drove to the airport. When he has to go through all these programs to find the specific problem and then load different programs to fix that problem, and on and on, he gets frustrated.

Will MBAM at least get rid of the pop ups and general issue?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Hi ChrystalR,

Have him run MBAM, then register here and reply to this topic. We can walk him through any further cleanup if needed.

Thanks, I'll do that. I emailed him earlier with the above links but he didn't have time to mess with it before he left for work. He'll be back this afternoon (around 1am PST) and I'll have him run the programs and register here.

You're help is VERY much appreciated!
    Thanks
