    hello all,
my laptop recently crashed due to a power surge, The guy at the shop said the mother board was fried. I left before I could ask him if he could recover the files from my hard drive. Is there anything that I can do myself?

I just bought a new laptop of the same brand just a different OS. Old one was XP new one is Vista.

Is there anything that I can do myself? The guy at the shop is good but very very expensive.

Thank you in advance for the help!!!!

readjs - Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Remove the hard drive from the broken laptop - the manual should indicate how to do this, if not post the make & model no. and we will find the manual for you.

You need to purchase a USB to IDE or SATA connector depending on whether the drive is IDE or SATA and connect the drive to it and the USB to your new laptop which will see the old drive as another drive and you can copy files across.

No idea where you live, but here is a UK source .....

If you are in the States look for similar at NewEgg, etc.

Welcome to board. I have been using this

to move files. You will need to remove your hard drive from the old computer. Plug the cable adapter into the USB port of the new computer and the other end into the hard drive.
I see PeteC answered your question while I was writing my answer.
