    Hi,

I just replaced the motherboard and CPU on my system and it wouldn't boot the hard drive. I decided to re-install Windows XP Professional to get the correct motherboard drivers but the installation hangs up at the "install Windows" screen with the following message. I then tried to install XP to a fresh, new hard drive and got the same results. I tried 5 or 6 times with the same results.

    The message is:
Manifest Parse Error: Invalid at the top level of the document.
    Error:
SXS.DLL Syntax error in manifest or ploicy file "F:\I386\asms\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.MAN" on line 0.

I can't find anything in the Microsoft Knowledgebase and am getting very frustrated.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Trying to install from a DVD or CD-ROM drive?

Original XP CD, or burned copy?

    Hi,

It is a burned copy and a DVD drive. But I have installed the same program from the same CD and drive before.

I'll try a different drive and look for an original copy of the CD -- don't understand what's happening, but it's worth a shot.

    Thanks.

Original CD will probably work fine.

XP for some reason seems to hate burned copies.

Everything deteriorates with time, if you select the cheapest cd blanks when burning copies, you'll win the race to the "Finish" line. Then again, sometimes the best fall short. It's an inexact science at best.

    Hi,

Problem solved! Actually, it wasn't the burned CD but rather the drive. When I switched to my TDK CD-Writer the program hic-cuped once and from then on, the installation worked fine.

For some reason, it stopped in the same place each time on my Matsu****a DVD/CD Reader -- about half way through the installation. Go figure....

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

Yep, that's why I asked about the drive :D

Glad you figured it out before I got back here...
