I would like to start first by saying I originally posted what I thought to be a Malware/Virus issue on this thread in the Malware-virus-removal forum.

With a great deal of help from noahdfear, I was ultimately instructed to post the issue here.
So with that being said, a quick history and an explaination. A few weeks ago, my sister brought a laptop that was having some issues. Bascially ladden down with Malware. Once removed the laptop worked fine for a day, and then she brought it back to me with another trojan... either I missed it before or it was a new one. I started working on it but was not able to access the Internet - thinking it was a virus again, I focused my attention on removal (all details are in the link above to the other forum.)

I am able to ping other computers on my network from the problem laptop, but I am not able to ping the laptop from the other computers. Also, as Noahdfear pointed out, I was able to get to Google's main website by the IP address, but not by name. Thus the DNS problem.

So, as it stands right now, I would like to try to fix this without doing a fresh install, though I am ready to do that if necessary.

    Something for you to check.
Open up properties of your Networking connection.
Then properties of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) "“ Advanced button "“ Options Tab

TCP/IP filtering should be listed "“ properties "“
Enable TCP/IP filtering should be blank
Permit all should be checked for all 3 ports listed.
    Save and reboot.

As for the ping command most firewalls block it "“ it’s allow incoming echo request in the ICMP settings of whatever firewall you’re using.

    Luck

ephemarial, thanks for taking the time to respond to my post.

Well... actually, I already checked that. In my original thread in the other forum, I mentioned this. Sorry I didn't explain that when going over what I have already tried.

So, in further explaination, I have tried everything with my router. I have connected the problem laptop directly to my cable modem. And, I compaired all of the Network Connection settings with a computer that can access the Internet. So, the problem was boiled down to - I am not getting DNS resolution.

Tough problem to solve. I spent a LOT of time on a similar issue. Bottom line is that flushing the dns cache doesn't fix it, disabling negative-dns caching doesn't fix it either. And it darn near impossible to uninstall TCP/IP from XP systems. But this simple task may fix things:

    1. go to Device Manager.
    2. uninstall the network adapter.
    3. reboot.

I did what you suggested and that didn't fix it. Any other suggestions?

At a command prompt can you enter this command:
    Code:
    ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt
This will create a new file called ipconfig.txt. Post the contents of the file to this thread.

Access LAN Properties > TCP/IP > Properties > Use the following DNS server addresses > enter 192.168.1.1

This uses the DNS table stored in the router rather than Windows. Then access Services and stop-disable DNS Client.

I did as you suggested, however, after I made the changes ipconfig/all showed that the changes that I made didn't take effect.

I rebooted, checked again still no change. I double checked the services and DHC Services still show disabled. Also checked TCP/IP settings, and they show the router as the DNS ip address.

Before I try this, I need to clarify a few things about this laptop.

First, this is my brother-in-laws computer. It is an old work computer that he is letting my sister and his step-daughter (my niece) use to surf the web etc. Their wireless network has 3 laptops accessing it.

Second, occasionally my niece will take this laptop to her grandparents house (my parents) and access the Internet via their wireless network.

With that in mind, I have a this question. If this resolves the issue, then will I have to configure the two other networks to allow this one laptop to have Internet access? If the answer is no - this is for diagnostic purposes only... then I will try it. If the answer is yes - then I am inclined to do a fresh install of XP.

Well, if I was to give away a laptop I'd wipe it & reinstall fresh...no worries that way.
