Outlook Express doesn't come with a spell checker...It uses the one built into MS Office. Do you have Office installed?

There are many free spell checkers if you don't have office.

express has its own spell checker, shouldn't need to use another right. I have Microsoft Office yes, but shouldn't express one work. When I use it, it brings up a list of words, but none are the right ones, its like bringing up weird choices. Its set to encoding ISO just like my Vista, not sure what is wrong

No - as has been stated twice already. For completeness from the URL I posted .....
From what you are saying the spell checker is functional, but is not coming up with the 'right' words.

I suggest you check out the settings in Word under Tool > Options > Spelling and Grammar - beyond that I have no idea why the 'wrong' words are suggested - maybe a repair of Word would help (Help > Detect & Repair).

I think it would be handy if you would post some examples of a misspelt word and the suggestions offered by the spell checker.

Also, you may want to locate and check the contents and encoding of the file "custom.dic ".
You can do a search (be sure to select "hidden and system" folders), but it should be located in one of these folders for XP:

    C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_ID%\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
    C:\Documents and Settings\%USER_ID%\Application Data\Microsoft\UProof
