A Tech at Linksys told me I didn't need to have any firewall or anti virus running on my system. He said it's built into the wireless router. Is this a true statement?
    thanks,
    Bob

Hi rgn. If you are behind a router then yes it does have a hardware firewall but for safe measures I would suggest also having a software firewall just in case. The Windows built in firewall would be fine. You should still have antivirus and antispyware software on your computer just in case an infection gets past your router. Its always good to have mulitple layers of security on a computer.

I am not aware of an inbuilt antivirus in any of the wireless router. You should always have an antivirus installed & updated on your computer.

    re firewall

    ====================
kapersky promotes the idea of proactive response and firewall-- just answering this via wireless saw an attack by that hel--- virus and was blocked by proactive response by other software. . Others promote this as well and the spyware peopple pick up on the many trojans crossing between spyware and way out somewhere--
Bitdefender , maxsecure spyware detective , Noadware do these things but you have to watch all programs.
As an experiment try cleaning out the registry using eg registry mechanic and see if you are attacked [ remaing online as you do the spring clean]

A Router is not a Firewall in and of itself! But! By the very nature of what it does is a natural Firewall alto not enough to go without a software FW!

    2nd
Not all routers have a built-in Firewall and if it does needs to be properly configured!

    3rd
as RSINFO said, I also have not heard of a Router with built-in AntVirus protection.

    My Rule of thumbs.

    1.
Router with good HW Firewall then Windows Firewall is enough and as far as I am concerned optional!

    2.
Router no Built-in Firewall, minimum Windows Firewall but something stronger advised.

    3.
If you have no Router/HW Firewall (example connected directly to Cable/DSL Modem) then you need heavy duty in-out Software Firewall.

    re firewall

I never used firewalls until recently but watchinh kapersky stop hell---- on three different occaisons from three diff ip addresses [what do u do with these--does yahoo ban them eg] -- Thanks for your reply-- could you explain how to set up so you can both have a fiewall [not just windows] and not block without blocking essential downloads [ but allowing for sites that instigate a yes no question with time to answer] It gets complex. I just wanted to dowload f-secures new free individual virus checker remover free
The new rootkit remover blacklight downloaded ok but as an old do user dos fprot and stiller i worry that eg the active x of windows rejected fprots-secure individual antivirus free [i think like old trend micros] was not allowed by windows -- at same time kapersky had just yesterday removed some parts of activex as infected.
Why do you think s\1-5-21 is appearing omn both desktop pentium 4 and laptop stiing nearby.
Maxsecure removes ok but this caused giat and i mean like dos 5 crash on xp desktop . And now again but claeaned up
here is f-secures new site http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/
    Thanks for your reply

hello mikec. Try Comodo firewall. It recognizes programs that are already installed on machine as safe and has a learning mode if you want to "teach" it. Better than Windows firewall.
