Windows updates will NOT install, after fresh install of Windows XP

I've just reformatted my computer, and 9 updates (after i've installed SP3) will not install, they always fail, all of them. Also, Zune software will not install, when zune tries to install, it says updates could not be installed, interface not supported. I'm pretty sure, that if i get windows updates working, zune will work as well.


What should i do? Thanks in advance.

 

hello greenday. Did you also install IE8? I had the same problem,( could get to Update page but page was all white with no options for downloading) but cleared up after uninstalling IE8 and rolling back to IE7.

 

yea, i can get to the windows update page and everything fine, but when the window pops up to install them, it fails all of the updates, and when i try to install them when shutting down, it just skips them.

OK ........... This was new news to me so I'll pass it along with the hope it is received similarly by others. I've got to say, its a home run in my book.

Microsoft has introduced a free support service to deal with failed Windows Updates, Microsoft Updates, malware, viruses and other "safety related" issues. I ran into a machine last week (brand new Lenovo laptop) that ran through several updates successfully and then went south - started failing every attempted update. I went through all the normal manual excercises with automatic update service, bits service and cryptographic service, software distribution, prefetch and more - all to no avail.

I did however, manage to stumble across a link which referenced this new Microsoft Safety Service, so I called them. The support I recieved was nothing short of phenominal. The technician I got hooked up with (Cesar) took me through all the steps I had already been through before calling Microsoft - ah ha - they didn't work for him either (this much was comforting). He then asked me to turn over control of the machine to him and after installing the appropriate software, I watched curiously as he moused about this laptop. This time he ran all of the above along with a batch file to re-register a lot of files. Bottom line - problem resolved.

I kept a copy of the batch file for future use and I was pretty familiar with all of the other steps required (which normally work when Windows Update needs to be fixed). In any event, if Dial A Fix doesn't work for you - call Microsoft PCSafety at 1-866-727-2338 and they will fix you up.
