    Hello,

When I receive emails (Outlook Express) that have Word or Excel attachements, and i try opening them my Outlook express freezes.
I find also when double clicking when in My Documents on a Word or Excel doc. it also freezes.
I have tried repairing Windows XP and Uninstalling/Re-installing MS Office but this problem still persists.
Does anyone know what is the issue?

    Thanks
    B

honetb - Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I don't think you have a problem with OE, but with Office which OE calls when attempting to open a .doc.

Many problems with Word can be resolved by replacing Normal.dot which can be corrupted, but as the problem exist in Excel as well this may not be the cause.

    Anyway try a replacement ....

Search (including hidden files and folders) for normal.dot and delete it (Word must be closed). Open Word - normal.dot will be recreated - and test.

    File location is ....

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot

You will need to enable 'Show hidden files & folders' under Tools > Folder Options > View in Windows Explorer.

What happens if you just open Word or Excel from the Start Menu?

Is this something that just recently started happening?
Can you associate anything with the time this started? Install a new app, or anything like that?

You could try a clean boot and see if it still happens.

Recently as of last Tuesday when MS issued a number of patches for Office?

If you right click on a .doc or .xls file > Open does it open or freeze up?
