Hi, has anyone else experienced any problems with XP service pack 3? I received it as an automatic update - followed the instructions and closed all running programs (inc AV) It seemed to go ok and got to the dialog 'Finishing Installation' The status bar got about 3/4 through and appeared to stop, but windows reported it as a running process, so I left it to run overnight, thinking it was just slow. About 9 hours later, the status bar had not advanced and the program reported as 'not responding'. I couldn't stop the process, no programs would work and the pc wouldn't shut down. I switched off manually, and re-started, with the message that the 'installation had been interrupted', and to re-install, but nothing would work, the task bar was unresponsive and not even system restore would run. I re-started in safe mode and managed to restore the system to before installing SP3 and everything is now good. Is SP3 dodgy, or did I just get a bad download??

    thanks

As I understand it, during the automated installation the computer is analyzed and only what is needed is downloaded. Maybe that analysis can fail and something is missing.

Try downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (the whole package, 316 MB, needs a fast connection). When installing, do it after a fresh restart, disconnected from the web and nothing running in the background.

And disable your antivirus & anti-spyware utils.

Take a backup of your data - just in case
