I have a Toshiba Tecra S2 running XP SP2 connecting to the internet through a D-Link Wireless router and Asus ADSL modem. The Toshiba uses an Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG wireless adapter built in. I have for some years been able to connect to the internet with very few problems but it is now erratic. When using an ethernet cable connection to the router, connection is generally OK, but is sometimes very slow to do anything after clicking, and sometimes the browser or Outlook Express times out. I use wireless in a room where I have excellent signal strength, but the ability to connect to the internet is unreliable. Sometimes it will go for hours with no problems, and then it will suddenly stop passing data and stay like that for minutes or hours, and then suddenly start working again. Wireless signal strength remains excellent. At other times, it will stop passing data after a few minutes before going to sleep. Its down times can last from a few minutes to a few hours. If I restart the computer, I can usually connect for a while before the above problem starts again. I have installed the latest version of Intel's wireless driver. As the cable connection also sometimes fails or is reluctant I wonder if the problem lies elsewhere in the computer. The modem and router don't appear to be the problem as two other computers in the household have no problems connecting through the wireless connection.

Any suggestions how I can improve my ability to connect to the internet?

It could be a neighbour has recently started a network which is interfering with yours, try changing the channel your using, I'll take a guess at 6 :D.

Apart from that updating your system may improve your connection.

I'm on channel 3. Tried various channels between 1 & 10 but no change.

Can you try updating to SP3, failing that have you looked for more up to date drivers for your WiFi device?

The problem is not a wifi problem as you have issues with ethernet too.
The problem is caused by one or more of the following:

    1. router itself
    2. modem
    3. isp connection quality
    4. computer infected with malware
    5. incorrect network configuration on comp (if recently changed)

To test by if modem failing or if isp bad:
    0. use ethernet
    1. power down modem, router, comp.
    2. connect modem directly to pc.
    3. power on modem, wait for synche w/ isp.
    4. power on comp.
If all OK then modem is good and isp connection is good. If no joy, then verify you have no malware infections and if so, remove them. (view the uppermost pages in the Removing Malware Forum here) If connection quality still bad then call ISP.

If modem OK & connection OK, and comp free of malware, then the router itself is failing. Get a new router.
