I have seen many cases of Windows Installer problems since SP3, but I think this one is different and unanswered.

After trying various ways to fix my WinInstaller, I decided that I was going to uninstall it and then reinstall it. I followed these exact steps, triple checking to make sure I uninstalled everything: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346

Now, when I try installing Windows Installer 3.1 I get this message:

"Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update."

Thus it does not install the program.

This confuses me in a few ways, in that I am trying to install Windows Installer, not a SP. Perhaps this is for SP2?. But I have followed various steps on the Microsoft support pages to determine which package to install and download, and this has to be the one. I am running Windows XP SP3 Home addition (I think 64-bit.. It doesn't say it under my OS, but my processor is AMD64. Maybe this is where I am wrong?) Maybe there is no redistribution for SP3 yet?

Anywho, so now I am stuck with a broken Installer that receives "Error 1719" when I try using it, and no way as of yet to fix it. Technically I don't have an Installer to use. I cannot rename registries in my MSIService, because I DO NOT HAVE IT. I cannot enable the service because again, I DO NOT HAVE Windows Installer at the moment. It was uninstalled lol.

Is there somebody that can help me out? I have searched for hours with no answers. I thought about uninstalling SP3, but I'm scared that something will get *******. My system restore is not working for some reason, AND I do not have a boot disc. So Yea you can see why I'm iffy about uninstalling SP3.

    Hello TheVish,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

As you have noticed, this thread was held back for moderation. The reason is that you have less than ten posts and it containes a link. I deleted your second attempt.

    To your problem:

I now run a clean installation of XP SP3 (slipstreamed) and have no entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs for Windows Installer. This indicates that SP3 installs its own version of Windows Installer.

Prior to doing the clean installation, I also tested installing SP3 on top of XP SP2. As I remember it, there was an entry for Windows Installer in Add/Remove after installing SP3. It seems to be a "left over" from SP2 but I'm not sure. I'll have to look around for more information.

The version of msiexec.exe on my system is 3.1.4001.5512

Evan may be right that the version you attempt to install is older than the one you need or Windows "thinks" is installed. However, If you really managed to uninstall Windows Installer ... ... how is it going to install itself ... ... since it originally came from the CD during the clean installation? (As I understand it, what you can uninstall is an update to WI, not WI itself but I've been proven wrong before ... :( ...)

Check if the system has C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe

I don't have version 4.5. but try downloading and installing it. You need the version at the bottom: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

It looks like that version of WI is what I needed. That's weird becuase all I could find is the 3.1 version. Glad that it's all settled though. Thanks a lot for the help!
