    Help! S.O.S. S.O.S.

I was operating a western digital IDE hd in a pc with asus motherboard p4t533.

I left the computer on several hours, came back and it was frozen, tried to restart but pc would not go to bios. disconnected drives. dead.
replaced mb battery. dead. i fear mb fried.! IT WILL NOT GO TO BIOS

opted to buy a used dell gx280 not knowing it was for ata drives. it came with a 40gig drive, I installed xp. runs fine. bought an adapter for old ide drive, ide to ata connection. I installed in the Dell GX280

xp in Dell sees the second drive but not the partitions in it just the whole 80gig drive and will not read it.

QUESTION: How can I get xp to recognize the partitions. old ide drive had xp installed in C: and there was D: E: & F: partitions varying from 18 to 20 gigs each.

I have jumpers in ide as slave (it was master in old pc) have also tried cable select but no success.

Any ideas anyone... I would enormously appreciate it...

Tblanco - Welcome to the Board :)

According to this manual the GX280 has both SATA and PATA (EIDE) connectors on the motherboard.

If this is the case with your example I suggest you connect the PATA drive to the IDE controller on the motherboard using a standard ribbon cable.

If the drive is still not fully recognised check it out with the manufacturer's disk diagnostics .....

You know, I feel like a fool... I had seen the DVD and CD attached and didn't think of using that IDE connector. However, it's the same, it sees the disk and it's size but does not see the partitions... I'll wait and see if anyone has any ideas. mean time I'll twidle around a bit with it...

I appreciate your help and , sorry about posting in the wrong area!....

Under disk managment it would indicate the disk was there, under explore nothing!
There was no letter assigned to the disk nothing.
Surfing the net I found a web page http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t557036.html there a greta guy (robsterrobster) posted a link to http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk where there is a great little program that was able to check my drive see the partitons list my files and finally using a last instruction for "write" it brought it back to life. just ahve to follow the instructions carefully.

If anyone has a similar problem when installing a disk from another pc that it will not recognize and it has important data, this could be your answer. I had tons of fotos that I feared I was going to lose, or at least have a lot of problems getting out and this worked for me...

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk jus take the time to read the instructions and think three times before pressing the wrong key!

Wish you all well ! Go Chargers!!!

So glad to hear that you resolved the problem :) Your experience highlights the need to make backups of any important data :D

BTW you may have resolved the problem by assigning a drive letter to the drive in Disk Management.
