When trying to do a restore,I get a message box saying "System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close ". Go to Computer Properties to check status, get box saying "run Dll as an App... "? Ran start, run, services.msc shows System Restore is Automatic and enabled. Ran fine about 4 days ago when I created new restore point, now cannot even access that. Only new programs installed were IE7 and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. Things had bee fine for a long time before that. HELP. Thanks in advance.

    Go here:http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to line 278...Restore/Enable System Restore.

"To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit. "

Hello mickzer. Went to site and line as directed. After running, showed successfully entered into registry. Backed out and tried System Restore. Still get box saying had encountered a problem. Am at wits end. About to think time for format and re-install. Thanks for trying to help, anyway.(Great site,Added to favorites to find again).

Well, you could try re-installing system restore first.

    1. Click Start > Run and type %Windir%\INF in the Open box & click OK
    2. Locate the SR.INF file. If you have configured Windows Explorer to hide known file extensions (default), the file will show up as SR
    3. Right-click the SR.INF file, and then click Install
    4. Reboot when prompted

Thanks for trying,Arie. Did as suggested. Got message box "The file sr.sys on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack @ CD is needed. Inserted disk and browsed to disk .Hit OK.Got message that file could not be copied. Think I will just do reformat and reinstall. Lots less headache.
