My Daughters boyfriend was using my Toshiba Tecra laptop when I was away and got into some adult sites. ( I'm having words but appreciated his honesty.)
When he clicked onto one site a virus message came up (I have Avast) He clicked on the message and a ad for virus protection came up which wouldn't click off the screen. He turned off the computer and when he turned it back on a blue screen comes up saying a problem was detected etc.
I cannot restart in safe mode, Cprompt, or any other option that the screen provides and the same screen keeps appearing. Is there any help for me or is the thing shot. I am really new to this and usually just use my laptop for marine navigation programs.
    Thanks for any help,
    Capnjon

    Hi,

    Welcome to WindowsBBS.

Post the full & exact error message.

Press F8 on startup & try "Last known good configuration" as startup option.

Did that laptop come with a recovery CD ? I would first try the recovery CD, If you have one. The problem sounds like a Disk Error ... You might have to reinstall Windows..

No, I don't have a recovery CD and the error msg. reads Problem in Beep.SYS
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    Technical Info: STOP:0x00000050 (0x81000078,0x00000000,0xF79CF2FF,0x00000002)
    BEEP.SYS - Address F79CF2FF base at F79CE000, DateStamp 48d397f5
The CD will not boot because of the freeze up.
    Is there any HOPE?
    Thanks again,
    Capnjon

Does this laptop have a floppy drive ? You need a Windows boot disk, A windows 98 boot disk will work. You have to get into dos... At dos prompt C: TYPE: chkdsk /f/r
    then see what happens..

I tried getting into DOS but I cannot get any further than the Blue Screen of Death.
It will not let me do any7thing.. I tried starting a windows xp startup disc but got a video failed to initialize on the dreaded blue screen. I am really new at this but am willing to try anything within my limited knowledge.
    Thanks for responding.

Quite likely the system is infected & hosed by the removal attempt of Avast. Your best bet is a complete format & reinstall.

I'll try that but will have to get an expert here to do it. That is over my depth.
Thanks again and I'll post if it solves the problem.
