I cant get my system restore to open. Each time I just get a message saying it had to shut down suddenly. My computer also keeps giving me errors on Windows Defender and McCaffee. And Add/Remove Programs wont open. I dont have a windows disc. This computer has a partitioned hard drive. With my Windows Restore stuff saved on it. I tried that but even rebooting and pressing the F10 button wont get it to start. Id appreciate any help in getting it back up and working.

I have couple of questions for you before we start troubleshooting.
    • Are are logged in with admin account?
    • did you try doing system restore with a new admin account on PC?
    • How much free disk space you have?
    • what windows OS do you have?
    • did you try doing system restore doing?
(start -- run -- msconfig -- launch system restore)
    • did you make sure system restore is not turned off doing ?
    (start -- run --sysdm.cpl -- system restore )
    • Is your system date is correct?

Thank you. Ok yes logged in as administrator.
Running Windows Xp Home Edition, with Service pack 3.
Of a 32 GB harddrive there is 10.9 GB free.
The errors I'm getting are as followed.
Windows Genuine Advantage, McAfee Proxy Service Module, and Windows messenger all give me a message that they have encountered a problem and need to close. This happens right at start up. And system Restore is not turned off.
Tried this (start -- run -- msconfig -- launch system restore). Got the same error message. That it had to close.

    try these steps:

Step 1: Start the System Configuration Utility
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
Step 2: Configure selective startup options
    1. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
    2. Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
    3. Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
    4. Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    5. Click the Services tab.
    6. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
    7. Click Disable All, and then click OK..
    8. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Step 3: Log on to Windows
    1. Log on to Windows.
    2. When you receive the following message, click to select the Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start check box, and then click OK:

--- I think some software is conflicting with system applications. Windows applications are not corrupt definitely

I cant uninstall anything though. Ill look for a removal tool or something. But does that explain it not working in boot up as well?

Is this the result of an infection? Is any other strange behavior?

Just everything that I've listed. Plus it seems I cant get online with it. And really most programs dont open. When I try to run Mcafee The splash page comes up for a few then just disappears. Not really sure what caused it. Its my moms computer and Im trying to help her out. Im running a Mcafee removal tool now. When its done I'll let you know if it helps. I really do appreciate all the help.

I'd like to rule out infection if you don't mind.

    • Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool.
    • At the disclaimer, please use the drop down box to select 3 months for the file/folder search, then click Continue.
    • When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
    • Please post the contents of log.txt here.

Ok, I gave it a try. After about 1 second of running it. I get the "encountered a problem and needs to close." Nothing will run on it. Im at my wits end.

Try Safe mode. Restart and begin tapping F8 to enable the Advanced Start Menu, then select Safe Mode.

Safe mode does the same. That was one of the first things I tried. I think I may have to take it to someone.

Have you check the Task Manager and tried to shut down all unnecessary processes?

I really think its something else. Maybe somethign in the registry has become currupt or something. I dont know. But I do know that its very serious because I cant get the System Recovery option running when its rebooting. Before if there was a problem I could always do that and either do a system restore or a complete system restore back to factory settings. Even that wont open. I keep hitting F10 and it just boots up like normal. It had a serious issue a few months back, wouldnt even boot up. I had to take it to someone and get it seen about. He said something got currupted while it was updating or somesuch. I think I may be looking at somethign beyond me to diagnos, and have to take it in. Its an older computer probaly 5 or 6 years. She has a new one, but like havign the convience of 2. Again I really do appreciate everyones help.

Have you tried running a check disk?

Open My Computer, right click Local Disk C: and select Properties
Select the Tools tab then click Check Now

    or

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit Enter to open a command window
Type chkdsk c: /r then hit Enter

With the first option you should get a message that the volume is in use, and an offer to run check disk on next bootup.
With the second, you might be asked to dismount the volume, to which you should answer No, then a prompt to run at next bootup.
Select Yes to run at next boot and restart.

Alright. I just tried that. Came back and said volume was clean then booted back up like it has been. Errors for several things that "encounteded an error and need to shut down." Oddly enough, the one program I have been able to get to run is Firefox.

Have you since tried RSIT again?
Open Task Manager and end process on explorer.exe (your desktop and taskbar will disappear).
Click File>New Task (Run), then browse to and select RSIT to see if it will run.
To restart explorer, click File>New Task>type explorer and hit Enter.
