Ok, I finally went ahead a week or so ago & downloaded (updated) Firefox 2 to 3. All is fine & dandy. I haven't totally got my head around all the new features (well, the awesome bar ) yet, but it is similar enough to Fx 2 to use straight away.

The Firefox set up shortcut on my desktop says 3.0.2 however. Now I have checked the check for updates in Help on the toolbar & it says I am up to date.

Groovy, but ... am I updated to 3.0.3? I think as I was experimenting with the browser a couple of days ago a pop up came up really quickly just above the systems tray icons on the right of the task bar (Windows Vista HP). It may have said I have been upgraded or something.

Also occasionally when I click the browser off a pop up comes up apologising for Firefox crashing & asking me if I want to restart Firefox? Even though it hasn't crashed.

Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I have heard of some folks having prblems updating from Firefox V2 to V3 in place. I installed V3 into a different location. Did you have any extensions installed under V2? Regardless, Help/About will show you the version/release/modification level you are running.

V3

OK, cheers. I had no extensions, add ons or anything with V2. It (V3) seems to be working fine. I was a bit worried about losing bookmarks, as I had heard that they could disappear, but everything was fine. It's just I don't know what the deal with the pop up is. Must just be some quirk or gremlin in the system. I will have a look in Help/About about more info on mod levels.

Will the real Firefox please stand up?

OK AKAJohnDoe, I checked which version I had & decided to download 3.0.3 (British) version (I am English & we spell a little differently!). It was successful & I haven't seen the irritating pop-up yet. Mind you it is early days yet ... :)

Irritating pop-up

Looks like I spoke too soon about the irritating pop-up! It seems to be going really well though. To be honest, Fx 3.0.3 doesn't seem any different to 3.0.2 ... like I expected any LOL

V3.0.3 is the same as V3.0.2 with the exception of a single bug fix. There was a fix to a bug in V3.0.1 that was accidentally regressed from V3.0.2, so V3.0.3 was rushed out the door to reimplement the fix.

If you take a screen shot of the pop-up and post it here, someone might be able to tell you how to fix it.

I did not upgrade FF from 2.x to 3.x, because I am carrying both. All upgrades were done separately. And, of course, I have two separate profiles. Both programs have behaved.

Pop goes the pop-up

Weirdly I filled in the pop-up where they were asking me about the crash I told them that it had not actually crashed & was working fine. I have not seen the pop-up since.

I had a feeling it was just a bug tweak update from 3.0.2 to 3.0.3

Of course, having now said that it is indeed working fine .... well I don't want to tempt fate by speculating ...

I was thinking about something like that, you know, just in case Fx 3 crashed & burned or something. But I thought ... in for a penny, in for a pound.

I don't know why the pop-up kept coming up (it didn't do it all of the time anyway).

I have heard some horror stories about the whole 3 series updates though. I don't remember anything like this about the Fx 2 series & updates.

I did like Fx 2 though. It proved to be far more reliable than IE 7!

Firefox 2 goes off support in mid-December 2008.

Indeed it does, and although it is difficult to give up what we are comfortable with, it's time to move on with
Firefox 3.

When moving from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3, I highly recommend a clean install of Firefox 3, rather than installing over Firefox 2.

Brave new fox

I thought about doing that as well, but it seems to be going OK at the moment.

Dave,

I'm glad all is well, and my suggestion was more for reference, than anything... :)

Thanks Ramona, I will keep it in mind anyway. I know some people who have had bad experiences with the whole Fx 3 thing. I waited for a while listening to all these horror stories , before I thought I would upgrade. I thought for a bit it was only people with older OS's that were having problems. I know people who have brand new computers who have had problems as well. I don't remember anything like this with the Fx 2 series. I honestly think it is an improvement on Fx 2 though. :D

Pop goes the pop-up!

I think I spoke to soon about the add ons. I have a feeling it was the RealPlayer Version Plugin 6.0.12.46 that was causing the crash alert pop up . I disabled it in Tools. :) I think the set up wizard mentioned this at the time . I haven't had the pop up since I did this ... Of course ... I could be speaking too soon again!

For fox sake!

 I should be wary now of putting my foot in my mouth . I am not totally convinced that my Fx 3.0.3 has crashed when I sometimes click the browser off. I don't know why the crash pop-up comes up sometimes. I don't know why it would only crash sometimes I leave the browser. Is there any way to disable the pop-up?

Hard to tell, as I have never had a crash with FF3.x.

I could point yout to some add-on extensions that might be able to accomodate your need to observe a Firefox V3 crash; however, aside from those ill-behaved extensions, I have to say that the transistion from V2 to V3 was smoother for me than the transition from V1 to V2.

Crash & Burn

Is it possible it isn't really crashing, but just thinks it is sometimes? I can close the browser 20 - 25 times, nothing will happen. The 26th time I might get the pop-up . I am confused at to what is really going on. Apart from this, the browser works fine. I don't know if this is any help, but it is more likely to pop up if I close the browser when I am in an open page. If I hit the home button & it goes back to the homepage, then click out it is less likely to happen. Can I disable the crash pop-up?
