I'm running Zonealarm Security suite. The manager at the computer store said the Windows firewall is adequate for general internet surfing. He said I don't need the Zonealarm.

Is this true? Is it true that the firewall in XP is good enough? How about Vista since I use Vista at work?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

I wouldn't consider the XP built in firewall to be all that good. ZA will at least give you another layer of protection.

Thanks. Zonealarm is kind of a pain sometimes when trying to get certain programs to work, so if I don't have to use it then I'd rather not.

How are you connected to the Internet? Directly through a cable/dsl modem, or via a router?

If via a router, I would only run Windows firewall.

I am connected directly through a cable modem. Would a router help the security and if so then how?

    Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I will look into buying a hardware firewall to enhance my security.

For discussion purposes, what would you rank the windows firewall on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 = useless, 5 = ok, and 10 = bulletproof?

I would give it a 7 or 8. Don't ask me about other programs though, I have NO need for them :D
