Hi BossDogg. When you say your computer is slow are you talking about just browsing websites with Internet Explorer that is slow or so your entire machine slow? In either case follow the instructions below to get your computer faster.

    1. Download and run ATF Cleaner, http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.

    2. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag, http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download.

    3. Download and run Auslogics Registry Defrag, http://auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/download.

    4. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup.

    5. Finally Click Start< Run and type services.msc. The Services window should open. Now scroll down, stop and disable the following services:

    Distributed Link Tracking Client
    Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Health Key and Certificate Management Service
    Indexing Service
    Net Logon
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Registry
    Smart Card
    Telnet
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    WMI Performance Adapter

If you want more information about what each service does go to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm.

Reboot the computer after performing the above steps and then see if you notice a speed increase. :)

    Hey Evan,
    thanks for the suggestion.
I just finished downloading and using the software you suggested.
My machine did seem to speed up by, I think the report said 21% not sure.
When I used the registry cleaner it found a lot of junk files, but didn't remove them is there a freeware program that can remove those junk files???

One final question Evan: I use NOD32 anti-virus and when it scans it doesn't
find anything. How would one go about doing a real good virus scan or should
I just rely on NOD32 results???

Your suggestions will be appreciated very much.

Don't worry if the Auslogics program found junk files on your system. When you ran ATF Cleaner and disk cleanup it got rid of all the junk files already. Its just advertising and they just want you to buy Auslogics boost speed. Just stick with using the Auslogics programs I gave you. Also did you try disabling those Windows Services yet?

If you want to make sure that your computer isn't infected with anything nasty, then download this little program called X Cleaner Micro edition. There is no installation required, it will just run and delete any threats if it finds any. Download it here http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe.

Download and install Spyware Blaster to prevent your computer from getting infected with malware in the first place. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Download and install Mcafee Siteadvisor which will warn you if you visit any unsafe websites that might want to install malware on your computer. http://siteadvisor.com.

Finally download and install Malware Bytes Anti Malware to really make sure you have no spyware on your system. You can remove Malware bytes anti malware if you wish since it doesn't offer you any protection that is free but it will only scan and remove threats if it finds any. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I would keep the programs I listed above because they are free and will keep your computer protected from malware. :)

Sure thing. Let me know if you have any more questions. :) Also just checking, are you using Internet Explorer 7 and Windows XP Service Pack 3? If you are not then I would recommend installing those pieces of software as well since they are major updates from Microsoft.

Great. Glad to hear your computer is a lot faster. I have recommended those programs to alot of people and every time someone has used those programs on their system, their computer is much faster afterwards.
