I had a wireless connection from my home laptop working fine. Then for some reason it stopped, and I get the dreaded "limited or no connectivity" message.

I am unsure how to proceed to fix things.

Using ethernet cable I can connect fine. With wireless not.

    My IPCONFIG showed this :
    DHCP enabled YES
    Autoconfiguration enabled YES
    Autoconfiguration IP address 169.254.152.142
    Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway 169.254.152.142

    I manually adjusted the TCP/IP properties :
    DHCP enabled No
    IP address 10.0.0.3
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 10.0.0.2

This gets me connected, but no received packets, no internet connection possible.

Any suggestions? Thanks, in advance ...

Change the wi fi router wireless channel

10 to 1 you have wireless signals drifting in and causing interference
You may not even see the intruder and yet your computer wireless will not connect
Change the channel from the default channel 6 to any of the other channels
1 and 11 are first picks as they are 2 other totally distinct non overlapping channels
change the ssid from the default values ( linksys , wireless and default) are the most common. Even if you only add a digit after the ssid
next turn on encryption if not on
Ensure that the router is high and not cluttered or obstructed

If you need help with setting up your router then a good source is

    http://portforward.com/

wireless rogue signals can drift in out the blue far distances and cause trouble. A free utility netstumbler may help you find them

wireless wi fi impresses people as high tech
    its not foolproof
you may have to change the channel from time to time

Thanks for the reply. I changed the channel as you suggested, to 1, and changed the SSID name. But, still I get the WLAN connection (54 mps signal strength Good), but still I get no received packets/no connection to internet.

    Any other ideas?

Yes, I am sure I am. I only have one, and its been working fine previously.

I got my laptop working fine on my office wireless connection, so it seems it has something to do with the router settings?

check to see if the computer / network card is connected to the router at all
    start >run > cmd > ipconfig / all
if you are connected to the router you will see a 192x ip
if so check that your dns settings and ip are set to automatic and that the network in the options > network that a proxy server is not set up
    uncheck all settings
    sure is a puzzle

Your ip settings are not the ones used by the access point.
169 addresses are local addresses assigned automatically by Windows when router connection fails.

First question on the road to resolving the issue is this:

What brand model router-access point do you have?

    Second question:

How do you connect to wlan? Windows built in wifi management or the wifi management utility that came with the wifi adapter?

    Router is A-Link RoadRunner 24AP(i).

I use Windows built-in wifi management.

    OK, thanks.

    1. open Windows wifi mgmt > view available wifi networks > click "change order of preferred networks ".
    2. if your wlan is in the list, remove it.
    3. config networking TCP/IP to use dhcp (obtain address automatically).
    4. shut off comp.
    5. shut off router, remove power cord, wait 10 seconds.
    6. power up router, wait until it synches w/ the isp.
    7. power on comp.
    8. when fully on and networking up and running, you'll see the wifi icon in system tray w/ a red slash through it.
    9. double click that icon, scan for available wlans, select your wlan & connect.

Thanks Tony for your reply. I have been away 1 week, so not had chance until today to test this. I followed your instructions but still, I cannot connect from my laptop.

The "refresh network list" finds the right network (I changed the name of the network to check this). I can even connect to the wireless network using my Nokia E71 phone. But, with my laptop I cannot connect.

I don't know if this is importnat, but in your instructions part 2 - I could not actually remove the network form the list. one showed up, but I don't see a way to actually delete it. But, after turnong off, and refreshing it did pick up the newly-named network correctly.

By the way, I do not anymore get "limited connectivity ", I don't get any connectivity at all.

    Any other ideas?
