I've run into a strange problem and hope one of the hardware gurus here have seen it before or may know what it is. I'm upgrading my son's Compaq Presario V5000 laptop (actual model number is V5204NR) with a larger hard drive. It had a 40 gig Hitachi Travelstar drive in it (model HTS541040G9SA00), I've upgraded it to a Western Digital 120 gig drive, model WD1200BEVS. I used the WD Data Lifeguard utility to clone the drive and it worked successfully. However, when I boot the system with the new drive, the CD drive is no longer visible to Windows (not in device manager, disk management or my computer). If I put the old drive back in, the CD drive is there again and works just fine. I can boot from the CD drive with either hard drive installed, so I know the drive is fine. Both the hard drive and CD are SATA. The OS is WinXP/SP2.

    What I've tried:

Updated all the drivers to the latest available from the HP site.
Booted to safe mode, deleted the SATA and IDE controllers via Device Manager and let windows redetect them.
Removed the CD drive and put it back in to see if Windows would find it during boot.
I worked with HP support for almost an hour last night (totally useless IMHO), and basically got nowhere.
I called the store that I bought the drive from today to see if they had experienced a problem like this and the answer was no.

I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out. I've never run into a problem like this before and I've upgraded several laptop hard drives this way. I'm looking for help or suggestions at this point.

I'm thinking about redoing the clone process tonight, I don't think that will help either but I'm out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When old HDD is installed, (and optical is recognized by XP), go through the BIOS settings, check / note your settings, primarily in HDD / CD settings.
Repeat the above, but with new HDD and see if BIOS settings have changed.

    Hi Dennis,

That's part of my problem, none of the BIOS screens show the hard drive or the CD drive like you would expect to see them, not even on the main panel. Makes it very frustrating.

Go into the BIOS and look for the setting "Quick Boot" or "Quick POST ", disable it.

Boot into Safe Mode and see if the drive shows up and works there.

The other suggestion I would have is to uninstall the burning program/s. If the drive shows up, reinstall it.

    Hi Matt,

There's no option like that in BIOS. I tried Safe Mode, still no CD drive. I've unistalled the burning software, still no go. I'm going to try the drive copy again tonight to see if that makes a difference. I've opened an issue with Western Digital on this also, not sure they will be able to help but it was worth a shot.

    Hi BillB,
Not sure if this is of any help but have you looked to see if there are any firmware updates or patches for the drive? Also have you tried the custom update in Windows Update? it may find the drive through there and ask if you want to install drivers?
    Regards
    Jac

In the BIOS, use Load Setup Defaults, p.133 of the manual.
    Run Diagnostics -> Hard Disk Self-Test, p. 135.

Here is the HP support page:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us

How did you make the clone? How did you connect the second drive? The way I would do it is to put the new drive in, then use the WD tools to partition and format it. Connect the original HDD and then use the WD copying utility.

My thoughts are that: 1)the laptop is not updating the drive information in the BIOS when the new HDD is connected, 2)if the drive was partitioned as an "external" drive, the MBR (Master Boot Record) information might be wrong or 3)that a (burning) program that controls the CD/DVD drive can't work in it's new environment.

    Try resetting the filters:

    Finally resolved the problem.

It must have had something to do with the fact that the new drive was connected via USB to SATA cable. The WD utility was able to recognize the drive and do the copy, but something in the copy didn't work properly. I ended up taking both drives and hooking them up in a desktop case, then booting with an old ghost CD and using it to do the clone. Everything is working fine now.

Wow, lesson learned for the next time.
