    Hi again,

I am trying to unzip a file into my systems folder but I'm not allowed due to lack of administrative privileges. I am signed on as an administrator but I've been reading that there is another level of administrator privilege that I must access for this task. Any ideas on the easiest way to do that?

    Thanks!

Thank you! That will be very helpful. I'll give it a try.

Thank you for checking Evan, I did try one of the options listed on the site you gave me (the DOS option) and got the message again, after following the instructions to the letter, that my access was denied. My original intent was to try to unzip a downloaded wing.dll file into my systems folder in order to run an old CD-ROM game that I bought. It is a typing program for kids. I'm not sure if that is the right tactic, but it was another suggestion that I received. I really want this program to run because I've heard it is one of the best. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Evan, I just tried again and was able to access the administrator privilege. So I got the program to open, go through the opening setup and then it just goes black and goes no further. Are you familiar with trying to run old programs in Vista? Thanks again for your help.

Since its an older program try right clicking on the installation file and click properties. Click the compatibility tab and select the checkbox that says run this program in comatibility mode. Also click the checkbox that says Run this program as an administrator. Click apply and click ok. Now try running the program again.

    Hey thanks,

I probably should have tried that in the beginning. Here is a related problem. Unfortunately when I originally installed the program it was from the administrator user. Now it is stuck there I can't get the program to open correctly from any other user. I tried to uninstall it (thinking I would reinstall it from my user name) but it didn't show up on the list. I tried sharing it, but I don't think I did that correctly since nothing changed. How do I get the program to show up from my regular user site? I know, I'm a real computer neophyte.

You might be better off uninstalling the program (from the Administrator account), then re-install it on your own account by right clicking the setup file and selecting Run As Administrator.
If successful, you will likely also need to do as Evan suggested and set the program's executable to run in compatibility mode. If starting the app from the Programs menu, just right click that shortcut and select properties to access the compatability settings.

Thanks! I did try to uninstall the program, but maybe I'm not savvy enough to find it. The usual uninstall does not bring this particular program up on the list of programs to select from. I read somewhere that if the program was not written for the operating system you are working from (I got it to work by changing the compatibility setting) that you have to uninstall a different way. Is that the case? I hope that make sense.

If its not showing up in the add/remove programs list then you can try running the uninstaller for the program manually. Click Start and Click My Computer. Double click your C drive and navigate to the following directory C:/Program Files/Program_Name. Find the name of the program in the list of program files and see if you can find the uninstaller for the program from there. If you can't find the uninstaller then delete the program from the program files directory.
