Is there a way to tweak the registry so that one can shutdown without stipulating the reason for the shut down like a "planned" event of some description? Thanks.

    This should work
    Open mmc.msc

    Add the Group Policy snap-in

    Under Administrative Templates expand System

Set Display Shutdown Event Tracer to Disabled
