Hello, I have a windows XP Pro and .I AM the administrator for it . Each time I log on I get a message that reads as follows

    Restriction Warning
Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD Drives

I bought a brand new Fuji digital camera but I cant load any photos into my computer because Im blocked. Would anyone be able to help me enable my drives and get this darn message out of my machine . I am not too good with the computer so please spell it out any suggested fix in detail. THANKS in advance.PS . No new components were added to this machine.I did have registry mechanic and I cancelled the subscription . Soon after that I got this warning message . Im not sure if the two are related .

Hi Corvettesr1. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :) Try this:

Are you running Winddows XP Professional? If so click Start> Administrative Tools and click on Local Security Policy. Within Local Security Policy navigate to: Security Settings> Local Policies> Security Options> Devices: Restrict CD_ROM access and set the option to disabled.

If your running Windows XP Home Edition, a registry edit is required. Click Start> Run and type regedit and press enter. Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Locate "allocatecdroms" and set the value to 0.

After your done performing one of the two options then reboot the computer. Hopefully one of these options will work for you and you will be able to access your CD drives.

Oh thats easy. :) Right click on the taskbar (the blue bar on the bottom of your screen) and click properties. Click the Start Menu tab, make sure the regular start menu is selected not the classic start menu. Once you have made sure that the regular start menu is selected click the customize button, then a new window will open. Click the advanced tab, under where it says start menu items scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list where it says System Administrative tools. Select the option that says Display on the All Programs menu and the start menu. After that option is selected you can add or remove other start menu items if you wish. Once you are finished click apply and ok. Now when you click start the administrative tools menu will show along with any other items you selected to be on the start menu.

Im curious about one thing . You seem to be asking me to "Restrict CD ROM access "and set option to Disabled. My goal is to Enable CD /DVD but im sure you know that.

    Hi corvettesr1

    Welcome to the BBS!

Go to Control panel then Administrative Tools then Local Security Policies.

    Then do as Evan said!

Another way to get there, type this in the run box:

    secpol.msc

Then click OK or hit enter.

OK are you logged on as an Administrator?

If you really are then you have other issues likely Malware or Virus.

Do the below to be sure:

    =========================================

    Download Xclean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe

No install, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.

Xclean will run minimized and will pop up a window if it finds anything. If it finds nothing it will exit.

Please make a note of what it found if any as this might indicate a deeper Malware diag.
OK are you logged on as an Administrator?

    Then do this:

    Reboot

Download then update then run FULL scan

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If it found much the reboot to Safe Mode and run it again then paste s new log for this run when back to normal mode!

    Finally do the below:

To look deeply at you system:

    Download
    RSIT http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe

Run it post both logs here.

ok X clean found about 51 things. and I let it get rid of them. The was also something called U control you .As Evan said I did get as far as security settings and security options but didnt get to devices because there are the pictures of a pad lock on thing. Im sure you guys would know what to do but its like a brick wall for me. Im ****** because I own this computer and im the administrator and I never made any setting that would prohibit access to MY cd dvd drives. With a brand new fuji camera sitting here that I can even use now.

Well if we cant get it ,I still thank you all for your help.

Who said we can't get them??

And is the CD Drives all that you are locked out of?

But you only said you did part of my post!!!!

If XClean found 51 entries then you likely have more so do the rest of my post if you want this fixed!

1st the Malwarebytes update run full scan delete all.
    reboot

    RSIT! Post both logs!
