I think I'm gonna have to go back to Nortons. This is getting rediculous. Avast is now identifing my Theft Recovery Program as a virus (Trojan).

The only way a Theft Recovery program like this can be effective is if it can run undetected. I have placed the "C:\windows\-----.exe" in the Avast exclusion list, but everytime I reboot, Avast detects the program. The Theft Recovery must be able to access the internet undetected. If Avast keeps detecting it, it can not do its job.

I need an anti virus program that WORKS, any ideas

Not likely. This program was installed in my laptop a couple of years ago (almost three years). McAfee had no problem with it (originally installed in latop when it was bought new). AVG 7.5 and AVG 8.0 had no problem with it. Finally Avast had no problem with it until 2 days ago.

    It ain't a virus

Avast Tech support did respond to my email a few minutes ago. And I sent them a copy of the .exe file. They also explained how to prevent Avast from scanning the program. Hopeflly they fix the problem soon.

Post at Avast forum about it, and wait for couple next updates. They'll eventually fix it.

Meanwhile, right click on Avast icon, then "Program Settings ", go to Exclusions

That alone does not work, it still detects the Theft Recovery Program, here are the directions that Avast Tech Support sent me

You have to exclude this file(s) from 1) the resident protection scanner (on-access scanner) and 2) from the on-demand scanner:

    1)
    a) Click on the blue a-ball icon in system tray to show the resident protection settings
    b) Click on the DETAILS button
    c) In left pane, click on STANDARD SHIELD provider
    d) In right pane, click on CUSTOMIZE
    e) On the tab ADVANCED click on the ADD button
    f) Type in the name of the file you wish to exclude. Add the "*\" characters in front of the file name. For example, if you wish to exclude the file called "avast.exe ", type there "*\avast.exe" (without the quotation marks). The row will then look like this:
    http://public.avast.com/~zrubecky/pix/exclusion-on-access.png
    g) Confirm all changes with OK button(s)

    2)
    a) Right-click on the blue a-ball icon in system tray representing avast! antivirus
    b) From the menu select PROGRAM SETTINGS
    c) In left pane, click on EXCLUSIONS section
    d) In right pane, click on ADD button
    e) Type in the same row as in the step "f" above
    f) Confirm the changes with OK button(s)

Both parts need to be done.

As of today Avast is no longer detecting my Theft Recovery program as a virus. Avast fixed the problem.
