    [Resolved] Unknown Infection

My computer has recently been infected with... something... I don't know what, but I've run Spybot three times today even and it's deleted over fifty things. I'm downloading AVG free as we speak and i know I need to run other tests to determine the cause.

Symptoms: Everytime I open IE I get another popup of a random site, everytime a page loads a **** virus checker ad pops up, my computer will no longer stay in Stand By mode (a bad thing for a college kid who needs a computer to be in standby), Itunes videos skip, and finally my credential manager is no longer auto-logging me in and adding passwords.

Any help? I need a link to HiJack this if necessary.

I think I know what it is now. I believe it's become infected with Antivirus 2009, so can anyone help me fix this?

    Hi daralee100,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Great! If you have not restarted the computer since running MBAM, please do so now. Then, download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.

Please disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Looks good. We need to restore a file, and I'll let the author know about the detection.
Navigate to C:\Qoobox\quarantine\C\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\IAM\Bin and right click/copy the file ASWLNPkg.dll.vir
Now navigate to C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\IAM\Bin right click/paste the file into the Bin folder.
Now right click/Rename the file, removing just the .vir extension, so that the file is again named ASWLNPkg.dll

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

Lets follow up now with an online scan. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
    • Click Run at the Security prompt.
    • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
    • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
    • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Click View scan report at the bottom.
    • Click the Save Report As... button.
    • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
    **Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs.
    • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Post the Kaspersky log and one more fresh HijackThis log. Let me know how the computer is behaving.

For the record, the time is still funky from the Combofix and my credential manager still won't single sign anything on like it used to before it was infected. Everything else seems to be fine. Apparently not since it found a trojan...

Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
    • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
    • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
    • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
    • Expand the "Tools" menu.
    • Click "Resident ".
    • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
    • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

    Reboot.

Now scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {47836122-9D2E-476C-9763-B1D366F704E1} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8D443C00-AF1B-4B0A-AE4D-E41822238666} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" /runcleanupscript
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbXNGwWQ - C:\WINDOWS\
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: OneCard - C:\WINDOWS\

Close all other open windows and programs, then click Fix Checked.
Close HijackThis and restart the machine, then create and post another HijackThis log.

Tea-Timer is still running, therefore none of the fixes made with HijackThis stuck. Please repeat the steps for disabling Tea-Timer.
Once you've rebooted, download ResetTeaTimer.bat by right clicking the link and selecting Save Target As. Save it your desktop.
Now double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to run it.
Then since it will not be needed again delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

Now run HijackThis and fix the entries previously posted.
Reboot once more, create a new HijackThis log and post it here.

Great! Now open MBAM and remove any items quarantined. Do the same with your resident antivirus and Spybot.

Click Start>Run and type ComboFix /u then hit Enter to uninstall ComboFix and remove the files it has quarantined. This action will also reset the System Restore points, removing any infected files there as well.
Verify the C:\Qoobox and C:\ComboFix folders were removed, as well as the C:\ComboFix.txt file.
You can delete any other logs that were created/saved too.

Run ATF Cleaner once again as previously described.

Re-enable Tea-Timer and reboot, then do a HijackThis scan just to be sure none of those registry values were put back. If all is well, that should complete the cleanup.

Here's my log. Thanks for all the help! I also need the clock fix too after this is done because military time just isn't my thing. Also, my single sign on feature stopped working right after I was infected... Would this be a setting that the spyware messed with that I can change it back?

    Log looks great! :)

When a file download dialog box opens, you can select Save or Run, doesn't matter.
If you save it, just run it when the download is complete.
If the default format shown by the tool is not what you want, press R and hit Enter to set it from the International Settings control panel.
    Reboot when done.

Single sign on? Please clarify. I'm unsure what you're refering to.

It's through the credential manager. It used to auto log me in on sites by imputting my username and password but since my infection started it hasn't and I didn't change anything... It doesn't matter, there's probably a support site somewhere about it, I just wondered if it was something from all of this.

The credential manager did reinstall and no change... I'm trying to reinstall the whole security tools suite again to see if that helps.
