Hello WindowsBBS, hopefully you can help me with this problem. I recently installed Vista SP1 (x32 platform) and when I restarted, the desktop icons had become messed up. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

I already tried a little program called Rebuild Icons although it was x64 so it didn't work as intended. The jist of it was changing the desktop to 16-bit colors then back to 32-bit colors to refresh the icons, which I did manually, still to no avail. What should I do?

    That's an easy one :)

Run the registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ explorer \ Shell Icons

    Delete the value 29.

    Restart Windows.

Thanks, that was really easy and it worked.

See if you can help me with this, too: When I got Comcast broadband, they put a piece of software on my computer that never left my taskbar. To be precise, it was worthless and inconsequential so I blocked it from my startup programs. Of course, now I get a taskbar prompt saying I have startup programs blocked, which is even more annoying. Hopefully there's a way to tell Vista I know why I'm blocking certain programs and don't need it pointed out on a daily basis.

Once again, thank you for your advice.

Instead of blocking it from starting up, did you try uninstall it?
