Notepad crashes, Can't navigate to anti virus websites

Hello All,

I wonder if I could trouble you with a little problem I seem to have.
It appears my XP Pro portable (service pack 2) was infected yesterday. The symptoms are:

- Notepad crashes.
- Can not navigate to anti virus websites in either firefox or IE (I'm using a second computer right now)
- Occasionally the computer freezes when shutting down (while saving settings)
- It occasionally crashes starting up just after entering username and password.

I have done the following
- I ran the latest Microsoft malicious software removal tool. It found nothing
- I ran the latest Spybot S&D in safe mode, it found and removed virtumonde.sci but that had no effect.
- I ran the latest Dr Web quick scan in safe mode, it found nothing. I am now running a full can with it.

The first time I ran HighjackThis, it gave two errors about being unable to read registry entries but it does not give those errors any more.

I would send a HighjackThis log but it outputs to notepad which crashes before I can save it. Should I post screen shots somewhere?

See if you're able to do this on the affected computer. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.


If unable to do that, try this from the affected computer.

• Click here
• If it launches a file download dialog for download_file.exe from noahdfear.net, click Run.
• download_file.vbs file should appear on the desktop, and shortly there-after a renamed copy of ComboFix.
• Please note that the vbs file is recognized by some security programs as a Trojan-Downloader.JS and may try to block it. I assure you, the file is safe.
• If successful, shut down all open windows and programs, double click the renamed ComboFix and follow the prompts.
• It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

You really know your stuff! This has fixed the symptoms and, unless you tell me otherwise, I'm sure the problem is solved. For your reference here are the last details:

Both besttechie.net and majorgeeks.com were blocked on the infected computer so I downloaded mbam-setup.exe on a second computer and moved it over on a flash drive.

The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware update worked which is remarkable because on the infected computer, malwarebytes.org was blocked in firefox and IE.

The log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware opened in notepad which no longer crashes. The log is attached bellow.

Also attached is the HighjackThis log


FYI: The Dr Web full scan in safe mode (that I started before posting) finished overnight. It found some unlikely issues with some NetBeans, AOL and earthlink files I hadn't touched in years but more interesting it found tdssserf.dll with Trojan.Fakealert.1304 I want to emphasize that the Dr Web scan did not fix the problem but that it was your instruction to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware that solved the issue.

This infection usually requires more than one tool to completely remove, so lets run another. Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.


Please disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

• Close all open programs and windows
• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
