Does rebooting the pc clear up the problem?

The clipboard can only be opened by one application at a time (opening is a pre-requisite for copying or pasting). Some other app had the clipboard open, when you tried to copy. You can usually just wait a second or two and re-try.
It was probably some app that is programmed to monitor the clipboard for new data. Maybe a Clipboard Extender like my ClipMate, or something that monitors the clipboard for URLs. Such apps are: download helpers, iTunes, google earth. You may have an editor with a built-in clipboard stack, etc..

Occasionally you will be running an app that doesn't handle the clipboard contention gracefully and you'll need to re-start it.

Many thanks Chris, I uninstalled Glary utility, had a memory optimizer feature, solved the problem!

No Steve, rebooting didn't help, I uninstalled a utility that had a memory optimizer feature, did the trick. Thanks
