What sort of synthetic device do you mean?

It probably requires a special set of drivers. Usually, a CD disk is supplied with the device that contains the drivers. Sometimes you may need to go to the manufacturer's website to get drivers if they are not automatically installed (as Plug and Play). If you go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager, you will probably see it listed as an "Unknown Device" (it may be listed as a Human Interface Device if Windows has partial communication with it). You can just try uninstalling the device in Device Manager, it may be identified correctly when you restart the computer.

If you find that it "should not need drivers ", it should work as Plug and Play, look at finding updated drivers for your motherboard chipset.

Thanks Matt for your advice but I got the issue resolved. It was called. a pointing device driver when I received the error message, I had to uninstall it and reinstall it. I don't really know what I'm doing but am learning a lot. Never had this many issues before.

    That's good :)

If it is laptop computer, it may have related to touchpad drivers. (Actually, was it Synaptic not synthetic? Synaptic make touchpad controller drivers/software). If it happens again, look for an update at the laptop model's driver downloads (updates).
