I recently did a clean install of XP. I copied the CD to C:\I386 so I would have system files local on my C drive. I also added an entry into the registry under "installsources" so that C:\I386 was listed. I believe these are the only changes from the clean install. When I run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) from the "Run" command under "Start" it asks me to insert my install CD. When I insert the install CD is doesn't recognize it as the correct disk. A friend of mine says he has a "stock" XP install and when he runs the sfc command it checks his system without asking for the install CD. I have since removed the registry entry for the C:\I386 location. I still have the same problem. Any suggestions? I would prefer not to have to use the disk any time I make system changes, etc. Thanks in advance!!

    Cose as well...

I did close but not quite...

I have my C: drive multi partitioned.
I created a folder and called it ...:)eek: )WinXP:)eek: )...
Next I copied ALL files, folders everything from the Windows XP cd into the folder

Next follow that with upgrade over Windows ME.
Should also be able to Install cold turkey fromthe folder as well.

Now then when it asks me for the original CD, it does not, it just goes to the Partition and gets its files from it.
Done the same thing in each version from Windows 3.1 on...
just make certain that you keep the serial number handy and close...
