xp slow startup after upgrade to SP3

    Just upgraded Win xp pro with sp3 on a 25GB partition. Everything fine except for much slower startup... 30secs dos then 2 mins to Welcome screen and 30secs to complete ... total nearly 3mins. I've run a couple of cleanup progs and defragged to no effect and the partition is 50% free space.
    Am running Kaspersky AV and sure there's no virus trouble. Could Windows be doing some new background checks during the sequence ?
    Any suggestions...?

    The normal startup time for my computer is ~75 seconds until Norton Internet Security is up and running. This is when the internet connection is either OK or disconnected.

    However, if the internet connection is "limited or no connectivity" (or whatever the message says) it takes 2-3 minutes ... :eek: ... and your startup sequence is similar to mine when "limited or no connectivity ". (Pre SP3, my computer took slightly longer to startup under this condition but not 2-3 minutes.)

    Maybe a waste of time but disconnect the computer (physically, pull the plug) from the internet and see what happens.

    PeteC / Christer... thanks for your response.
    I have several partitions running independent XP systems on the same PC (using HyperOS).
    1. I have now tried SP3 upgrade on 3 of them always with the same result ...
    (a) 3+ mins to start up - still an unresolved problem
    (b) v. slow icon build up on desktop - resolved by adding a new key to Registry 'max cached icon' with string '2000'
    (c) loss of System Restore points - perhaps new Service Packs always delete these ?

    2. Deleted all SP3 installs ... now running with SP2 and a 1 minute startup with no problems which I will stick with.

    To repeat I use HyperOS which allows me - at different times - to run independent versions of Windows.... a useful test bed. Puzzlement is that I've tried two drives with the exact same version of XPpro, the same applications on board so all use the same hardware & software on the same PC ... yet both display the same problem ie around 1 min to startup with SP2 but 4mins to startup with SP3. In each case SP3 was downloaded and installed to each particular drive separately ie the install was not mirrored from one drive to the other.
    Q: Have found the slow SP3 issue on several forums so MS must be well aware of the problem ... can anyone point me to a response from MS - are they on the case or not !!

    Logic says that HyperOS may well be the problem - do they have a forum on which you could post the question?

    I use Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 for the same reason, but have no problems.

    My XP Home SP2 (heavily used & "polluted ") takes around 1 minute to boot to the desktop, while a more pristine XP PRO that was updated from SP2 > SP3 takes only 26 seconds to boot to the desktop.

    Both VM's only have 256MB RAM allocated.

    I'd have to agree with Pete & would look into HyperOS as being the cause.

    Am now giving up on this one after an hour on the phone to MS [Delhi!)during which a techie remotely examined my systems and could not pinpoint a problem. It appears that SP3 resolves some instability problems and consolidates updates. Since I do not suffer any instabilities I will be no better off with SP3. If I uninstall SP3 as I did before & continue with SP2 only, I should not have any problems receiving future security updates so - what the hell - I've dumped SP3 again and I'm back to 1min. startups!! Not enough folk have had my problem to engage the attention of MS.
    Yes, I did check with the Hyper)s Community forum with no luck. I uninstalled all the HyperOs stuff but found no change so HoS seems to be in the clear.

    For now yes, but I bet you that come June 2010 updates will require SP3.

    I thought that the problem was with running XP SP3 in HyperOs, but it seems you had problems with XP SP3 as your main (host) OS.

    Yes - HyperOs is not an OS but rather a system which allows manipulation of various Windows systems on different drives using Dos.

    Yea, I know what it is, but I thought you were seeing the delay on XP SP3 running in HyperOs. That's why I added my comment on VPC.
