My original post is below but I have been trying to fix the problem and have discovered the Explorer.exe file will not run correctly and stops the computer. I have copied via Safe Mode DOS another copy of Explorer.exe - no go.

I have tried a Repair load but even this does not work.

Do I need to start again? Load NT4 then upgrade again?

    I am getting desperate now!

upgrade Win NT4 to XP Pro failure
Following an upgrade to Win XP pro my computer will not boot up.

I get as far as the nice picture of the field and maybe an icon or two then the automatic I want to send a fault report to Microsoft for an Explorer.exe fault. The message displayed is:
Application Error. The instruction at 0x100034f4 referenced memory at 0x006e6f63. The memory could not be "read ".

This is followed by 2 or 3 more windows for explorer fault report requests which I cannot send as I have no internet connection on this computer.

On clicking on don't send the icons disappear and the machine stops.

Control Alt Delete brings up the Task Manager and I can shutdown from there.

    However I have noted that the following Processes are running;
    TASKMGR.EXE
    MGABA.EXE SYSTEM
    SPOOLSV.EXE SYSTEM
    SVCHOST.EXE LOCAL SERVICE
    SVCHOST.EXE NETWORK SERVICE
    SVCHOST.EXE SYSTEM
    SVCHOST.EXE SYSTEM
    LSASS.EXE SYSTEM
    SERVICES.EXE SYSTEM
    WINLOGON.EXE SYSTEM
    Csrss.exe SYSTEM
    SMSS.EXE SYSTEM
    System SYSTEM
    System idle process SYSTEM

Any help on repair of this computer would be appreciated.

What sort of XP-pro install CD do you have?

    Upgrade failure

    Supergeek,

I am using a proper Microsoft Upgrade disc.

I have also tried unplugging all 'extra' cards and running the repair option from the CD. This has not worked either.

    Any ideas?
