I've heard that, in some cases, the OS (XP Pro) can be installed without initiating the Sata drivers prior to completing Windows Setup. Understandably, the performance may not be quite what it should be. While the case in hand seems to be working OK, the Drive Temperature seems a little higher than the norm.

Would it be possible to rectify the situation by applying the drivers after the event in order to avoid doing a complete rebuild?

    Question 2.
Is the above a really dumb question, or what? :)

    Ta...

In short - if your BIOS and XP cd can see the SATA drive to do an installtion - you're good to go and shouldn't need to do anything else.

Yes - load the chipset drivers obtainable from the manufacturer's website. Whether or not that will rectify the drive temp I have no idea, but at least you will have the dedicated drivers.

    .

Thanks Mr Jones and Mr C.

I'll try the Post Install trick after I run Acronis and let you know the result.
Haven't had much to do with SATA although I wouldn't think they would run hotter than ATA as a norm.

What really puzzles me is that I can't have Acronis installed (in XP) the way it is because overall performance is woefully retarded, and random tray icons go missing even though the items concerned are running in the background. My senses tell me that this is likely to be related to SATA and it's control of the file system, and/or SP3 (XP). That guess goes out the window a bit, because from the Boot CD Acronis performs faultlessly fast, although finding the available drives could be a tad slow?? After most of the better known repair tricks, the simple way out was to forget having Acronis on the system altogether, and just use the CD.

Hopefully, Mr C's trick may be the cure-all...

    I'll be back!!!

I'm not quite clear as to whether or not you have just installed a SATA drive or not - the implication from your first post is that you have.

In my experience - I have 3 SATA drives in my box - drives of different manufacturer run at different temperatures. Of course position in the box will also have a bearing on this.

Current temps - booted up 30 mins are .....

Samsung SATA 2 - has OS partition and several others = 25 deg C
    2x Hitachi SATA 1 - data drives - both = 28 deg C.

This pattern is maintained throughout the day.

I have no problem with Acronis 11 running on XP SP3 and it is set to make a scheduled incremental image once a week to one of the data drives, which is backed up to an external SATA 2 drive. I have no issues with performance or missing icons so I suggest your problem may be with the installation of Acronis.

FYI I have prevented certain elements of Acronis from running at startup using CodeStuffStarter, specifically TimounterMonitor, Schedule2 Service and TrueImageMonitor.

FYI - I am away as of Saturday 13th and will not be logging in for the next 2 weeks.

Many thanks for ALL those details Mr.C - have a great holiday, you deserve it.

The system isn't new and has been OK up till SP3 days at which time I restored an old Image and adjusted the partition sizes. Resizing may have been the bad thing.

All the MoBo drivers seem to be installed OK but other problems still persist. The problem drive is Seagate and is now running around 40 C in a cool 18 C enviro.

Next on the agenda, when time allows, cough, 1) a serious check on the Drive Status, 2) resetting Partition info, and 3) a quick "Clean" OS build with a new version of Acronis.

Surely that will tell the story. Currently, I'm only monitoring it with HardDisk Sentinal with Temperature being the only abnormal sign.

Thanks again, really appreciate those Tips. I haven't bothered limiting Acronis on other boxes, but I should, as I will only ever use it for Images. Enjoy the break...

    Thanks :)

BTW HWMonitor - if left to run will record max and min temps as well as current value.
