    Win XP (sp2)

Today I decided to update/upgrade several softwares on my computer and that's when everything went down the toilet. First my Kaspersky Internet Security wouldn't properly uninstall and using their own removal tool didn't solve the issue. I manually deleted leftover files, folders and registry entries.....but I still couldn't install version 8 (received error code 1923).

Then when I tried accessing the search window....it's blank and only the yellow dog in the corner is visible. Also when I open up IE7.....I can only access yahoo.com and a few other sites. Any other site I try going to is just white-blank.

There's a flashlight icon when I try going into "My Documents" folders for a couple of minutes.

When I reboot, I'm getting a blue or black (color changes) background screen with a large box in the middle with weird characters on the left corner and an "OK" button towards the bottom (see image link below). The ONLY way to get back into my desktop is to click on "OK. "

    http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?image=16748122on9.jpg

Obviously something must have gone wrong when I un-installed some program (most likely XP Smoker Pro) because that happened immediately after I uninstalled it. It probably messed up the registry.

I ran "CHKDSK /R" twice and it did not fix this isue. Also I tried going to several AV websites and run online virus scans but the page wouldn't load. I can't get Kaspersky to install either.

Below is my HijackThis log and SmitFraudFix log. I appreciate any asistance as I do not have my Windows XP CD to re-install the OS. Thank you in advance.

    Hi left4dead,

Lets get a better look at things.

    • Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
    • When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
    • Please post the contents of both logs here in your next reply.

I'm not seeing anything to suggest malware as the root of your problems. Do you happen to have the installation files for the programs you uninstalled? I would suggest trying to re-install them, then uninstall them after rebooting, and only after first performing the following to reset the registry permissions.

Download and install SubInACL from Microsoft.

Close out all other programs and open windows.

Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.
    Code:
    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools "
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /owner=administrators /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=RESTRICTED=r
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /owner=administrators /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=RESTRICTED=r
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /owner=administrators /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=RESTRICTED=r
    exit
    cls

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window.
Right click in the command window and select paste.
It will take a while for the commands to process, so please be patient.
The command window should close on it's own when finished.
Reboot for the changes, if any, to take effect.

Now re-install, reboot, then uninstall and let me know how things are.

    Hi noahdfear,

I did as you suggested but I still can't get Kaspersky and XP Smoker PRO to re-install. Funny thing is that when I open IE7....I still can't access certain sites like hotmail.com (blank page) while sites like nba.com is telling me that I need to install flash when I already have the latest version.

Also the SEARCH window is still not working (blank).

Since it's not virus/spyware related.....I have no clue as to what's causing this.

I just noticed an extra space in two of the subinacl commands. Doubt that it would matter, but I'd like to run a couple of others so will redo the first ones as well. First, close all other open programs and windows. Then copy the contents of the code box below and paste them into a command window.

    Code:
    cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools "
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /owner=administrators /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=RESTRICTED=r
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /owner=administrators /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f /grant=RESTRICTED=r
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose
    exit
    cls

Reboot when it completes and try re-installing once again.
