AntivirusXP 2008 virus thing...

Hi, basically I have looked on the threads for this topic, and found only one, however it was dealing with this problem after the actual virus had been already cleared. However, ashamed to say, despite doing my best to clear all of the infected files and running various virus scans and anti spy-ware scans, i still find myself with the problem.

I have no ability to change my desktop background and have this stupid one that the virus put there, which has an image of a warning window on an irritating blue screen.

Also, during my exploration of this problem I found several issues that this little bugger has raised.

1). My internet usage has become limited, every time I click a link from a Google search it will open a new tab (I use Mozilla Firefox) with a completely irrelevant page and some don't open when I copy the address of the link into the address bar.

2). I get the error "Generic Host Process Win32 Services has encountered problem and needs to close ". I also get my computer restarted by some DCOM server thing and NT Authority, which I solve by just putting "shutdown -a" into Start>Run, but it would be better not to have to do that right?!

3). The whole fact that my Display options in the control panel are limited to Themes, Appearance and Settings. There's no Display or Screensaver option. So I'm stuck with a silly background.

I've got a HijackThis log file if this will be any help. I'll post that below. Other than that please ask me specific questions and I will answer them as best I can, but if you could help me that would be real hot! Else my old dear compy is bollocked!

Welcome to Windowsbbs.

Let run this and see what happens.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hey buddy, thanks for that mate, I happened to keep looking on this site, and found that this problem has been solved by Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware before, so last night after posting the problem I found the solution. However, I could not repost saying not to worry as it had to be allowed as a thread by an administrator first! Just a quick question though,

My system has issues with restarting, and MBAM told me to restart as there were some difficult files to remove, I tried, but the system shut down as usual when I try to restart my computer. However, when I switched my computer back on later (you have to give it a while else it gets stuck in a loop at boot up) I did a rescan to be safe, and none of those files turned up in the scan. So does that mean it successfully got rid of them even though the restart didn't work properly, or is it just missing them?

I'm sure it got rid of them, a shut down or just a reboot would have the same effect.

I would run a on line scan to make sure there is nothing lurking. Instructions below.

After we make sure you are clean, you should post this problem in the Hardware or your OS forum, what ever your OS is.

Here are the instructions for a on-line scan.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.


Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Click Run on the window that opens.
Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Under Scan on the left side.Click on My Computer
• This will start the program and scan your system.
• Click the "Scan Report" On the left side.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As button, and in the Browse dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type Text file. Click OK to save the file.:
• Save the text file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky results if anything was found.
