I feel certain this question has been addressed many times. But, I have not been able to find a specific answer.

I have a never used retail XP Pro upgrade which I would like to use for a clean install replacing ME. Since I only have the ME restore CD provided by Dell, I am limited to the upgrade option.

The question: Can I do the upgrade then use my XP Pro CD to do a clean install without having the qualifying media?

    asif12 - Welcome to the Board :)
Not AFAIK - as you pay less for an Upgrade CD MS require evidence that you have a full copy of a previous operating system.

Your restore CD from Dell may be a full copy of Me as opposed to the standard Recovery CD, but you may run into problems as it is an OEM copy tied to Dell.

Ask around your friends - any Windows 98/Me full CD would serve as the necessary evidence to allow you to make a clean install of XP.

Thanks Pete C.. I am almost certain that the Dell CD will not work. I was thinking that maybe once XP was on the machine as an upgrade that I would be able to do the clean install. I have started my search for a 98/ME disk.

BTW.... I should be able to do an upgrade over Dell's ME without a qualifying media.... right?

No - you would still need 'evidence'. Formatting the drive removes all :)
Yes - you have Me installed already which qualifies - AFAIK it makes no difference if Me is OEM or Retail.
