When booting up my wife's PC, a splash window always opens :

stisvc.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application. "

Clicking on OK makes the window disappear and the PC appears to operate as normal, using Windows 2000.

A google search suggests that the error message is to do with Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. But why is the error occurring and how do I cure it?

(We may not have any need for WIA on that PC if it has anything to do with securing images from a digital camera - such a camera has never been attached to that PC and never will be. We use my PC for that purpose.)

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi BeeJay

I guess you did get kicked out of the flow somehow, sorry so long!

OK in 2K go to Services (start-run services.msc) and find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service stop it and set to Disabled.

    Let me know!

Thanks but I tried that fix. Only 1 problem - Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is not listed there!

    Yeah Ive seen that sometimes.

    OK this will do it.

    D/L Autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Run it look for stisvc.exe not sure where but it will be there, when found uncheck it do not delete.

Should be under Services Devices or Explorer but you may have to look deeper.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/stisvc.exe-19043.html

    Name: Still image service

    Filename: stisvc.exe

    Command: C:\WINDOWS\stisvc.exe

Description: A variant of the Backdoor.Sdbot family of worms and IRC backdoor Trojans.

    File Location: %WinDir%

Startup Type: This startup entry is installed as a Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP, or Vista service.

    Service Name: Still image service

Service Display Name: Still image service

    HijackThis Category: O23 Entry

Note: %Windir% refers to the Windows installation folder. By default, this is C:\Windows for Windows 95/98/ME/XP/Vista or C:\Winnt for Windows NT/2000.

I would download HijackThis, run a scan and post the log in the Malware and Virus Removal section of the forums.

10-4 Whiskeyman. Right on! I remember now that is an oldie! I think 2003 era.

It has to be in the system32 folder to (possibly be the correct one).

If it is in the windows folder only it is for sure bad!

Thanks. Using Start - Run - services.msc I have found it under Still Image Service and set it to manual.

First reboot showed no error message so let's see if that is it sorted. If not, I'll run HiJackThis. Seem reasonable to you?

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.
